If you have your own library of stuff and know how to setup automated downloads, you can use Emby or Jellyfin as your media server and Infuse as your player. This has been my setup for years and it's flawless. It does require a purchase of Infuse (either yearly or lifetime) though. If you want to go cheaper you could use the native Jellyfin app or one of the few clients for AppleTV that are free. I would suggest Infuse though because it's so good.

If you're trying to access somebody else's stuff, then it depends on what they use. Most likely you'd be using Plex though due to its popularity.

Ok, yeah I don’t think I’ll make my own library. Do you use other people’s servers? I see plex got lifetime membership of $90, I just want to access to movies and shows

Unless you're in the Apple ecosystem, I would suggest considering an Nvidia Shield.

I do not. I personally hate Plex. But I have all my equipment set up to do everything myself so I would never need it anyway.

Setup a new TrueNas server. Parts were gifted from my job; Asus ROG STRIX X399-E GAMING, AMD 1950x Threadripper, 512gb nvme drive. Paired it with my 2 14tb hgst white drivesfor my plex media server and 2 1tb wd black enterprise drives Setup in mirror for my NextCloud for myself and the family. This was a fun build. Was able to watch a few youtube videos so I can have external access to NextCloud for the family

hello, tiny bump

I'm still in the process of setting up all the VMs on my homelab :mjlol: partly because the summer was busy, partly because I've mainly been fiddling with Proxmox and the individual VMs as I have been configuring them.

A couple of things I found fairly recently:
  • Cosmos Cloud, which runs on top of Docker, a streamlined approach to self-hosting. Probably more than I need atm, but it looks nice
  • Proxmox Helper-Scripts (RIP tteck) - so far I have only used the Docker LXC and I think kernel cleanup scripts, but they definitely simplified things. I was having trouble running some containers on my Synology (I think because it's running an old version of Docker?) so I set up Docker in Proxmox

i got a Synology DS223j laying around that I'm kind of torn on what to do with. I was about to put up for sale on offerup, but on one hand something keeps telling me to hold onto it. On the other hand, I'm about to upgrade my PC and I could just throw the old build into another case and run a custom NAS off that (though a damn i9 9900k might be a bit overkill for that). My understanding is the ds223j is a bit weak for a NAS, but I was wondering if I might be able to find a decent usage for it. Right now I'm running a Jellyfin server off of my laptop with an 8-bay external disc drive attached.

Hard to give an opinion without knowing your use case. Why aren't you using it currently?

Is there a blog or YouTube series to get into this? I want to build up on this to do more than store data.

Depends on what route you want to go. Plex can run off Synology or Freenas. Synology is more expensive but it's way more user friendly compared to installing and running TrueNas/FreeNas.

I have a similar setup, going from Synology to the AppleTV.

Plex has free movies, Infuse does not. You need to implement Plex in Infuse. Infuse understands Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, HDR10 and 10+, Plex doesn’t. I enjoy the highest quality of vision and sound on a LG OLED, Denon Kef setup.

You will need the pro version to get the max out of both.

I purchased these apps years ago, when they were extremely cheap. Under 40-60 dollars each.

Over the years I expanded (as it’s my hobby as well) and installed Plex vs Jellyfin and the Emby servers on my Synology.

Plex can run off anything that can run Plex server software. That means a regular computer, anything that runs Linux.
