Everyone who does evil hates the light (the Sun), and will not come into the light (the Sun) for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
John 12:35-36 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light (the light is the Sun) just a little while longer (the Sun will set soon). Walk while you have the light (the light is the Sun), before darkness (night time) overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark (at night) does not know where he is going. When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them (i.e. the sun set, because Jesus is the Sun).

Metaphors and similies, unless you actually believe Jesus was also a literal shield... or a shapeshifter, since he is also called the Lamb.
