I call it the "Pink" affect. Remember when she first came around and everyone thought she was a lightskin/mixed Black woman?

:rolleyes::dry:

Her music was a bit more "urban" and she was presented as such. She nor the label really actively said she wasnt until Black people put her on then she completely changed genres and makes white music now. Then later some program I saw on VH1 years later she was all like, "Duh! Im not Black:skip:!"

Im sure older posters may be able to point to an even older example.

There was rumor she could be light skin...but I thought she was just a white girl in the Eminem mold. R&B community embraced her too. I liked those singles off her 1st album!

But apparently she said record execs told her to be R&B & that wasn't the real her.

Her words from her single "Don't Let Me Get Me"

"L.A. told me, you'll be a Pop star. All you have to do, is changed everything you are".

Pink did do R&B (even before her 1st album) back in the mid 90's tho. This from 95' w/ her group, Choice

R&B put her on! She wasn't exactly pop star....but more r&b diva. I think she wanted freedom...but it seemed like she was taking a shot at r&b music, imo. Pink wasn't out there being britney spears so it wasn't 1998-2000 made for TRL pop music, lol.

Yeah. I think when she said that line, it was because L.A. Reid saw the whole Britney Spears shyt was working for Britney and like SOME CEOs he saw the money and thought "hey, she could do this too". But to Alicia's (Pink) favor, he heard her out and realized he just had to let her bet the artist she is and do her thing and not try to create her into something she's not.

Yeah, I think she detested the whole Britney Spears/Jessica Simpson shyt and found her way by being the anti of that. Which did end up working for her. She found her lane and niche as a mainstream artist after the Missundaztood album.

Race is a social construct loosely based on phenotype

Once i found out Mariah Carey was black in the 90's....i accepted it with no questions asked. I consider Mariah a black woman. Mariah doesn't shy away from r&b...Nick Cannon repeatedly referred to her as a beautiful black woman. Mariah is old school one drop rule...not this new aged biracial crap.

I give Obama props for just being black by time he was president....he didn't play the biracial card. He stuck to the one drops rule. granted, I don't agree with his policies as the black condition did not improve. But i give him credit for not going the tiger woods route once he got into office.

but her r&b music already seemed opposite of britney, jessica, mandy. listening to pink and her music videos seemed much more in line with Beyonce, Maya, & Aaliyah. Hell, I wish Christina Aguilera went hard with the R&B from the jump...Justin Timberlake was lucky he could switch to r&b after his pop days.

True. She was already doing R&B. I just mean, I think after the 1st album didn't quite do what they thought it would, I think the L.A. and the label was on some "you should go the Britney route" and she was was like "naw, they ain't me. That ain't what I wanna do". So they let her do her thing and then you got the alternative rock pop songs she started putting out after that.
