"Impact" as we know it is overrated.
Neither Jay nor Nas have a major impact on modern hip hop in comparison to Thugger, Wayne, and Keef but does that mean much?
Nas is 30 years in his career still dropping critically acclaimed albums, getting revered by rappers young and old, selling out MSG, getting top 10 albums, etc.
Snoop debuted a year before Nas and his albums make far less buzz than Nas. Ditto for Ice Cube. Ditto for Scarface. Ditto for Ghostface. And even many rappers who debuted long after him like 50 Cent, Camron, Jeezy, Nelly, Ludacris, Ja Rule, etc. aren't gaining more traction for their music than him. Even DMX's latest album failed to gain traction even after dropping right after his death which dominated the news worldwide.
Even the people who are more "relevant" than Nas aren't exactly having shining moments right now.
Ye turned into a MAGA racist c00n. Eminem hasn't dropped a good album since Relapse(some say TES). Drake hasn't dropped a good project since IYRTITL. Jay used Samsung to buy half the sales of 4:44 and hasn't dropped a solo album in 6 years. Kendrick takes long breaks in between albums and his last album was polarizing. Cole has musically been on auto pilot for more than half of his career. And a lot of these "hot" young rappers today are dropping microwave music that comes and goes before the year is over. Remember Lil Baby's album from October? Exactly. Literally no one talks about that shyt. At least KD3 has amazing raps and critical acclaim unlike Baby's album.
But I understand this conversaton is primarily driven by stans of a certain rapper who shall go unnamed who's currently Andre 3000 status: Getting hot off features and going more than half a decade without dropping a solo album. Both rappers are GOAT's though.
