Yep they would of had the game in a chokehold if they kept that deal with Sony they had in place. It's all good, Nintendo got the last laugh with "Wii" nobody thought the 1st one would be that successful after Gamecube basically flopped for Nintendo standards. Love your Mega Man Avi. Mega Man was another great series on Nintendo that I loved playing:

Not only a legend, but one of the realest ppl ever in the gaming industry.
I highly recommend David Sheff's Game Over book on how Nintendo became the company it is today. Great read.

Gameplay had to be exceptional back then because you could finish a game in one sitting. It had to have replayabity.

Imagine not being able to save where you were in a game? That's why we had more fun back in the day cause you had to play the game in 1 setting and if you stopped you had to start over. Things didn't get easier for us until they came out with THE GAME GENIE which was used to give you more power and energy and short cuts in games:
