Tl Dr - gfk started it and down south nikkas ran with it
Well you had the gfk era when he wasnt making any sense. It was dope as fukk but it was just a stream of consciousness.
It peaked with the Pete rock song game at the 2 45 mark
The words were clear but the meaning not. But what it showed was that you could have a dope 16 just off of flow and how the words sounded rather than what they meant.
A lot if rappers would borrow this stream of consciousness type rap from time to time.
But the. Down south rappers took it to another level since their rapping styles have always been more melodic they experimented and realized that they could get words to sound how they wanted without having to waste the time to actually pronounce them.
The drugs certainly helped with this btw.
Of course just my theory.
Well I got some ideals, and Lil Wayne definitely was one of the forefathers but I want to hear from you before I share my thought

i don't know why uzi, 21, kodak, yachty, or any of them got called mumble rappers. they came up with that term because they couldn't rap and the "aye/yeah/etc" was always at the end of their sentence. but you can understand all of them. mumble rap wasn't about understanding them - it was making fun of their lyrics.
wayne, keef, desiigner, gucci, thug, future, migos actually mumble. they're mumble rappers and all follow in wayne's footsteps.

One thing no one ever mentioned is scatting in blues and jazz music proving that nothing under the sun is new lol. Mumbling has always been around in black music.

Maybe Black Thought did invent it. Seems he was inspired by Jazz as well lol.
It's also crazy considering how lyrical he was. People use the mumble thing as a crutch but we all know Black Thought didn't need to do that.
They don’t mumble. There is no such thing as mumble rap... nikkas just do new things and old people hate. So called “mumble rappers” got the best bars in the game today

ODB did just about everything except mumble. Nikka often shouted at the top of his lungs it was his actual bars that didn't make sense"Ya mama named peter, papa named skeeter / FUKK!! that nikka, when it come to the heater"
I still hav no clue wtf that means but he did enunciate clearly. He also seemed to have a slight lisp which affected his delivery.
