Which is ironic since What They Do was more a shot at Biggie/Junior Mafia and the Jiggy shyt coming out the East Coast. It's ironic because UGK (well, just Pimp C) dissed the Roots' "What They Do" and pretty much backpackers and purists basically saying "ya'll can have ya'll real Hip Hop, we make Country rap tunes".
Some of y'all just ain't used to hearing actual musicianship.
They have the best live show, too. When I lived in Philly, I saw them several times.
I agree....I like Clones and DIstorition to Static, thats it....2 songs out of like 50 albums.
Plus imagine a group like public enemy or wu tang playing interludes for jimmy fallon as a full time gig...smh
This whole thread smells like Ecko Unlimited. So the one hip hop group that we’re apply artistic integrity standards to now is the Roots?
I haven’t heard the term “sell out” in a really long time because hip hop lost the battle for artistic integrity starting around 97.

When is the last time someone told you The Roots were “real hip hop” ? 2003?
You old posters need to let these old arguments go.
Big Roots fan and the last couple of joints haven't resonated with me as much as the previous. Everything up to HIGO was my shyt. And Thought is Top 10 skillwise.
As far as "they", the only consistent members are Thought and Questlove. Losing Malik full time, Rahzel, Len Hubbard, and Kamal kinda sucked though. Lost their "soul". Dice still my nikka and is a good change up on the studio albums.
And they are mainstream now with the Tonight Show. Hoping their next album will be good though, but without the earlier core members, it'll never be what it once was.
Rap EMBRACES sell outs. fukking Drake has been Mr. Rap for like 7 yearsSo the one hip hop group that we’re apply artistic integrity standards to now is the Roots?

What's wrong with the Roots playing for Jimmy Fallon?I agree....I like Clones and DIstorition to Static, thats it....2 songs out of like 50 albums.

Why o why do most posters care so much about what other people think?Hip-Hop elitists told me The Roots, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli were real hip-hop and better than everything that's on the radio
This. And I wouldn't advise listenin to them all at once because they tend to blend together after a while. They discography is real up and down
Roots got albums I think are classic and then albums I don't like at all
