Nas didn't do the mafioso shyt because of anybody. It was a general trend at the time on the East Coast that was popularized by Kool G Rap and Mobstyle.

He is a Kool G Rap stan, has songs on Illmatic talking about "lamp like Capone", "Uptown was Alpo heard he was kingpin", and "I'm like Scarface sniffing cocaine" has a whole song called The World Is Yours. He was featured on AZ, Kool G Rap, and Raekwon's albums all mafioso albums in '95 and going by Esco on The Infamous.

Nas catching shyt for doing R&B/rap collabs with Jodeci, Lauryn Hill, and R. Kelly but nobody say nothing when Wu-Tang working with SWV and Method Man putting out songs with Mary J. Blige.

Man, foh. :camby:

This post summed it all up!!!!

@Inspect Her Deck How do you feel about Illmatic and IWW comparing to MJ's Thriller and Off the Wall?

I think @spliz made a great comparison there:jbhmm:

interesting comparison but reversed

Illmatic is the humble album but considered the better of the two by majority
Off the Wall is MJ's humble album but Thriller gets all the recognition

@ISO yep well I respectfully disagree

tbh I think people are eager to put another album up there with Illmatic in Nas' discography because of the fear of him just failing to live up to his first album

the best tracks on IWW very much belong but as I said it has one or two weak tracks....Illmatic doesn't have that issue

I don't think it's crazy talk if you put IWW above Illmatic tho...it's all preference

I was just responding to the video title
I prefer Illmatic too, to me its the best album ever.

I see why some people would say It Was Written is better though. It's a fantastic album lyrics, themes, storytelling, some classic beats, good skits, crisp mixing, cover and overall packaging is dope. It's a lotta things on this album nikkas are just catching in terms of subliminals and what not and its an album that takes you back into an era. I think it was misunderstood by heads but over time its absolute classic status and inspiration for a lot of artists we see out today. This album made Nas a superstar and its a street album at its core and he did like 4 million off it. True art holds up over time.

I think the Thriller and Off The Wall comparison is on point... :manny:

I get what you're saying

I still think MJ's albums are closer in quality than Nas' are

Illmatic > Thriller
But Off the Wall > It Was Written

""I WAS MASTERING AND Q-TIP SAID TO ME, ‘YOU’RE KILLING HIS CAREER.’" —STEVE STOUTE"

Q GOAT producer told you! (Same Q who oversaw mobs infamous and we know how that turned out). The Cacmasters , slapstick comedy duo, almost did ruin his career if it wasn't for 3 things.

A) illmatic's legacy running over
B) GODs lyricism
C) the fact this pop nikkas n cacs buckled under columbias huge marketing machine, bought so many copies of the shyt.

But If you nikkas feel "Nursery Rhyme Nas" then :yeshrug:
:dwillhuh:
Is it nursery rhyme Nas or gods lyricism?

It's the truth. I would be saying the same shyt if the same shyt happened to Biggie. Nas shouldve walked away with SOMETHING. Even Biggie acknowledged that much.

the only category that's debatable was 'lyricist of the year'
and since they had that stubborn mind set of not giving two 5 mics albums in a close span - biggie receiving 4.5 just wasn't fair
so it was only right to make it up to him

Son whatever way u look at it the nikka got snubbed g. He shouldve walked away with SOMETHING. shyt a bunch of other hip hop artists felt the same way at the time. shyt ain't even an argument at this point. U don't give a nikka 100. Then give another nikka a 90. But give the nikka wit the 90 class valedictorian. The nikka wit the 100 walks away wit no awards. No nothin. shyt wasn't fair and u know it. It's just that it's involving Biggie so u refuse to admit it. Matter fact the only responses u have in this thread are Biggie related. Nas shouldnt have walked away from that award show with no awards.
