Not sure you why you read "came back after a long hiatus" as a bad or negative thing. Everytime you get a big pop, regardless of the circumstances, it's a tip in your cap. My point was about La Nariz not being able to use those momentums and build upon them, which is a weak point of his (and the point of this thread).
I wasn't implying that huge pop wasn't "deserved" or warranted. In 2002 he was returning from having the best work of his career and being the main focus of the promotion (again, doing a great job at it) for close to 18 months.
Plus, that return had the best video promo buildup WWE/F has ever done.
And that prevented him from ever being a good face. He didn’t even want his character looking vulnerable in a video game ad

You don't understand...maybe nobody does. In 2001, the IWC actually thought he was the best. On all the forums...he was lauded as the all around best. They hated the Rock's guts. They loved RVD. They liked Benoit but would bash his mic skills. Austin was treated as neutral but he definitely had IWC support. They use to call him broken down because of the knee braces. Cripple H was always going over, in a good spot, protected, and was working the best talent(Rock/Angle/Austin/Jericho/Benoit) which covered up the weaknesses that was exposed after his 2002 return. That's why he got a huge pop. They actually thought he was the best of the best.
In the end, he was exposed as a fraud. Rock, Hogan, Austin walking out, Benoit being on fire in 02, RVD still being hot, Angle being at his best...this overlapped Cripple H...he came back too muscular and wrestling different..doing comeback matches as a face. Huge pop in NY but no one talks about the following week when he got WHAT chants.
He tried coming back for the same big pop again and it was a fizzle. People were READY for the big HHH face run in 2002, but after the Jericho mania match, fans had more than enough.

For one, his promos hasn’t always been great. There might be a handful of promos he cut that stood out but often times it was long and drawn out. The Rock and Stone Cold didn’t need 15 minutes to cut a promo….theirs were short and sweet.
2002 was his chance to be the top baby face in the company and by Summerslam he was back to being a heel again. Some wrestlers are better at being heels and HHH is one of them. He’s 1 dimensional in that aspect. Austin, Rock, Taker, Jericho, Angle, Edge were good faces/heels…could do both.
HHH’s popularity as a face was the product of being a DX member..HBK, XPac, NAO and Chyna made it cool to be DX.
And his 2nd run as a face was due to hype and build up for his return after injury. HHH never received the same pop he did that night on Raw In MSG. That was a once in a lifetime thing where everything was clicking for him but it didn’t last long.
