Mero didn't go pro because he sustained some injuries. I'm assuming it was a hassle to get the athletic commissions to clear him.

I have a coworker that was an amateur boxer back in the day, but he ended up getting into a bad car accident and it fukked his body up. He couldn't get a license to box, so he wasn't able to go pro. Still trained though and gotten some work with pro boxers. Sparred with guys like Hasim Rahman, William Joppy, Roy Jones, Shane Mosley, and Ricky Hatton. He has a video of his sparring session with Hatton, and he was putting hands on Ricky

Don't think that just because a person ain't go pro they not legit. There's plenty of legit badass dudes that just never went pro, for a myriad of reasons. Don't think that "amateur" = "lesser than"
