It wasn’t uncommon for rappers to have gone to college. Even for a semester. Even Ice Cube went to college in 1987.

And the ones that didn’t like a Nas, put in the work to be a writer which takes basic reading and writing skills.

Lyricism was a basic requirement. Flows and styles changed, but in order to be considered elite you had to be lyrical.

At some point everyone stopped going to college. Then no child left behind and social promotions dumbed down the fanbase.
