Retail workers should get commissions.Thats fine with me. I hate tipping from the social aspect. Also its not an appreciation for service anymore but instead a social obligation now. I was really put off by it a couple years ago when I heard a white bytch of a waiter whine out loud about "stereotypes are true for a reason" "DO THEY THINK I WORK FOR FREE" after a black family left the restaurant. I chewed her ass out and got in on management's ass after.
There is an entitlement culture not to mention a aspect about it for a lot of servers that is disgusting.
I worked retail for 4 years and had customers I literally spent 2 hours with trying to buy a laptop or some shyt for minimum wage and no tip. The expectation to please and effort to do so wasn't much different than a server so I don't have sympathy. Pay them minimum wage or above and keep it moving.
If tipping is baked in servers are essentially getting commission for higher sales and not for providing higher service. I'm not sure if that assuages your complaint, but it works for me.
