Yes, some people put on a show, for sure. Other's are sincere. This exists outside of the real of Christianity, as well (trance and possession). I've seen it outside this context. Within Christianity, the other poster was right, it is supposed to be understood for the reason they stated.
ok guys. the way it works is this. someone (usually a pastor), not some joe schmoe, can begin speaking in tongues. what happens is, they speak in tongues for a few seconds, then they start speaking in a language the general population will understand. they do this to interpret the words you just heard which sounded like "gibberish" to you.
when someone speaks in tongues, and doesn't interpret what he or she was just saying, then, that person is usually lying.
the purpose of speaking in tongues is very simple. just like some of u go to psychic's to find out whats gonna happen in the future. well, there is a higher power supreme to that of the psychic, which knows everything. that higher power is the holy ghost.
if u r a devout person, or someone who frequents the church a lot, and u have some type of calamity in your future, when these pastors start speaking in tongues, they will usually foresee it and will warn you about it. the pastor may request to speak to you after church if the issue is of a sensitive nature. these pastors, the truly legit ones dont ask sh1t from u. they dont ask u to pay nothing. thats all up to you. when what the pastor predicts comes to past, if u are a grateful person, u'll know to offer your thanks to the man of god in ways you feel is appropriate. you can buy him anything. or u can not. it's up to you. but if u have any common sense, you'll know not to fucck around with the messenger of the most high.
in other words, the whole concept of speaking in tongues is to relay a message from the holy spirit, through the man of god, to the general population. those u see dancing around and making a fool out of themselves have a judgement reserved for them.

i grew up in a penecostal church i used to loooove going to church on Sundays and spot all the new people visiting most of the time they are unaware of how a penecostal church gets down especially on a Sunday night service....
people running around the church speaking in tongues, people in transes, bodies laying all over the church

My grandma been going to the same church for 30+ yrs and says she's never caught the "holy ghost"what about catching the holy ghost? .. i've always looked at it as attention whoring
I do. The way that I do it looks nothing like the way I've seen other people do it though. I'm not sure why. It's moreso a murmuring for me. I don't shout it, it's something I use in my personal prayer life.
Speaking in tongues is a spiritual prayer language. There are things going on in the spirtual all around us at all times. Things that your mind and brain don't see in the flesh, but your spirit and Holy Spirit do see them and understand their significance and importance. So when you pray in the spirit, your spirit is like taking those things that you don't really know or understand to The Lord in prayer. It's very helpful and I'm thankful God gave us this gift.

I've never caught the Holy Ghost. It's a cultural thing, not a spiritual thing. Notice it's only African Americans who do this, not whites, not asians, not Latinos. Africans don't even do it. People from all over speak in tongues though
Glossolalia (speaking in tongues) has been long disproved and debunked.
They replay people the stuff they said and they can neither replicate nor induce it.
Plus, i find it funny that the only way people think they can communicate with their own little gods is VOCALLY...

Know whats funny...I went to church Sunday and lady behind me was going H.A.M with tongue-ing ..... .... the lady in front of me was catching the "Holy Spirit" pretty serious....and then two ladies fainted in the altar..... I just knew I was going catch a whiff of that spiritual work...............................
but instead I was just on my typical
