furious 7 is about to pass avengers for the worldwide 3rd highest grossing movie of ALL-TIME

and rock was in it for what..10 minutes? of a 2 hour and 17 min movie.

idk how much he was in the promo though but i remember the death of Paul Walker being the main catalyst as well as jason statham.. didn't hear as much buzz for rock before the movie came out

You don't remember too well because the Rock and that machine gun was basically the duration of all the commericals along with Walker running on that bus and Walker didn't mean jack shyt in 5 or 6..his love story was some background shyt for Rock and Vin Diesel. Only reason Rock was in it for so little time was because he was outworking everyone again and doing Hercules as well...a schedule clash was why he just did a few parts and kept it moving. But he was CRITICAL in the promotion no matter how much time he was in just like he was in the Other Guys.

Never saw maverick

Breh..it's exactly what @Cobatron says it is. I've seen it so many times on tv I don't even need to buy it and I've been tempted just because I love it so much. Richard Donner and Mel teaming up again and you get this scene. Fast forward to 1:30

Maverick is :ohlawd:

I owned that on VHS and then bought the DVD as well. I've seen that movie so many times. I'm still mad we never got a sequel.

Yeah, but Rambo or Rocky >>>> Rock's career

I respect that and cant deny that.

But I also thing its really a BIG SOMETHING that we all are comparing Rock's career to Stallone, Arnold, and other major big star actors.... (or atleast putting him in the same sentence/conversation)

... vs comparing him to Taylor Kitsch, Hayden Christensen, Sam Worthington or etc other guy Hollywood hoped to be the "next great big thing" but ultimately flamed out

it's blasphemous though. really i'll say his "run" started in 2011 with fast five. i will go no further back than that.. cuz i read the forbes box office report and it mentioned journey 2 did 335 mil in 2012 :mjlol: plus gi joe and hercules etc

"snitch" was his only non franchise or existing property type movie and it only made 42 mil.

san andreas was a good gauge for his star power though..though detractors might say its disaster porn and people would see it regardless.

lookin at his IMDB though we'll see a few more tests of his star power on new IPs in the next few years

Not sure how most of this thread ended up talking about Mel Gibson and Stallone and such but anyway...

The Rock had a less than stellar start to his career. That's not a diss, because he has come into his own in recent years but his early filmography just doesn't stand out at all. Even though I enjoyed The Scorpion King, The Rundown and Walking Tall, none of those movies really left a strong impact.

But as @FlyRy already said, he's got a decent run going now starting with Fast Five.

Yeah he has that movie star quality. But I don't think his movies are that great.

The Run Down was his best work. Can't really think of any other movie were I was like :ohhh: "this movie is amazing"

I saw some movie of his (can't remember the title) and some 100% cac played his son (:comeon:) hopefully the more movies he makes, he gets more power with casting and casts some people of color to play his family.

I think this is a vital post. When you really look at it, what was so special about Sly Stone in Demolition Man or Arnold in Predator? Yet those movies are considered classics, and rightfully so. So it's really not a question of acting skills when it comes to those two and The Rock. They're equal in that regard and there are much better actors out there that the critics go head-over-heels for.

There's something more to it. Sly Stallone, Arnold and The Rock have great success not only because they can fill certain roles greatly but also because they just have an insane amount of love from the mass population. That imo is the most rare type of public attraction. People love their personality. It's that simple. That's why the three of them will have major roles for the rest of their lives.
