Not that it was a good movie (barely remember it tbh) but i always felt Safe House would've been the perfect opportunity for that collaboration, with Will playing Ryan Reynolds character... which basically just a great value white version of the characters Will had perfected anyway.

This should have happened anywhere from 2012-19, when the modern live-action superhero craze peaked. That was the perfect time to announce and cash-in on a sequel or even a potential trilogy. No idea why a sequel has taken so long given that the original was a box office success that had known stars in Will and Charlize Theron headlining it.
