In Miami, Haitian-Americans Tell Pelosi, Wilson 'Stop Meddling in Haiti'

999t7q_lirpws

Haitian-Americans in South Florida met with U.S. House Speaker Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D - CA) and Frederica Wilson (D - FL) on Thursday and told the American lawmakers that the U.S. had to stop interfering in Haiti's internal affairs.

At the Father Gerard Jean-Juste Community Center in North Miami-Dade, Representative Wilson opened up the discussions with two Haitian-American elected officials, Miami Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime and North Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Joseph. According to the Miami Herald, the two men were at a loss for words when ask by Madame Wilson how can the U.S. help Haiti.

But the women on the panel, Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of Haitian Women of Miami (FANM), Gepsie Metellus, Executive Director of Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, Carline Paul, Executive Director of the Haitian American Youth of Tomorrow (HAYOT), and Attorney Karen Andre — did not mince words.

"The people of Haiti are saying, 'My goodness, let us govern ourselves. Let us find our own path... just support us,'" Gepsie Metellus was quoted as saying. She continued, “what do people want to see? They want to see the United States ask, ‘What do you want and how can we help you get it?’ We don’t want the United States or Canada or France or the rest of our friends dictating. We don’t want to be dictated to."

Carline Paul said “the people of Haiti say, ‘No interference. No [Temporary Protected Status] deportations after Jan. 20, no more support of President Jovenel Moïse as president of Haiti."

Karen Andre championed one of the chief demands of protesters in the streets in Haiti. She said, “the volatile aspect of this crisis goes beyond politics. It goes beyond partisanship. It goes beyond borders and is so dangerous it can destabilize the entire region... all I am going to do is repeat what the people have been saying for the last year... Where is the PetroCaribe money?"

“They are calling for accountability from so-called elected officials to account for where that money had gone," Andre said. “They are calling for a stop to the massacres, the extrajudicial killings that are happening."

Marleine Bastien decried the world’s silence asking “why is the world so silent about what’s going on in Haiti? Why is the world silent about the massacres? ...The Haitian people are suffering. The Haitian people are asking for our support. The Haitian people are dying."

Representative Wilson said the discussions had given her much to think about but by her lasting quotes appeared still consumed by an interventionist and meddling spirit. She said "we have to find a solution to stop the protests or we’ve got to find a way to remove the president. It’s just that simple."

And what move is that?

Joining the protest.

Co-opting the people movement for change like how papa doc did with rising black movement mixed with the growing anti-america movement that went on in Haiti after the end of the 1915 US -Occupation (in the 30's )

In the 80s that's what the haitian military/police did(Co-opting) when the people were done with the Duvaliers (papa/baby doc). ... It took haitians years after that to get the CIA-US government trained and funded Psychopathic Haitian military out of Haiti in the 90s.

Also in the 90s the CIA was trying to create some haitian intelligence agency, kind of like how papa doc era was like ...on some Ba Sing Se police force type of shyt

Now today if the Core group reinstalled haitian military/police force want to remove Haiti "President" (jovenel moise) aka the core group president, he will get remove but not the system aka the Core group and they other projects (NGO/USAID/IMF/NED) etc..

Its the core group funding the haitian police/military. when the US want to removel Jovenel Moise, the police and military will as well. The core group and haitian military/police force might want to change the president but not the system even though Jovenel Moise is fully equip yes man puppet for the them (the Core Group)

The haitian police/military force been the enforcers for the US since the end of the 1915 US Occupation. You have to take the puppet (jovenel moise)and his backers enforcers(Haiti police/military) out. Took haitians damn near three decades to get the US and france's Doc family out of Haiti. Took the 90s to take the haitian military out, just for the UN (core group) to reinstall them again with same head people and mission

If this is the case then this is worrisome. Are the Haitians on the ground aware of this?

Haiti Protesters Demand US, International Community Stop Supporting President Moise

WASHINGTON/PORT-AU-PRINCE - Yves Manuel in Port-au-Prince, Monica Lindor in Jacmel, Socrate Ameyes Jean Pierre in Miragoane, Charles Makenson in Jeremie, Innocente Desgranges in Petit Goave, Lucson Palmeus in Port-de-Paix and Junior Racine in St. Marc contributed to this report

WASHINGTON / PORT-AU-PRINCE - Thousands filled the streets of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as cities to the north and south again Friday to demand President Jovenel Moise resign.

"Jojo Mele! (Jojo's in trouble) Jojo Mele!" they chanted in unison to a raboday beat, waving their hands and clapping. Some held tree branches while others lifted posters up high for all to see that read: "Demisyon Jovenel" (Resign Jovenel.) They also had a message for the international community: stop propping up our corrupt government.

Opposition leaders and anti-corruption militants called for nationwide protests, saying their goal was to march to the United Nations headquarters, this time to make sure their demands are heard.

"We give Mrs. La Lime (Helen Meagher La Lime of the United States, the U.N. Secretary-General's Special Representative for Haiti) 24 hours to remove Jovenel from the country," opposition Senator Evaliere Beauplan said. "If she doesn't do it, we will be back here every day until she gives in. She must stop supporting corruption and the massacre of the people (at the hands of the police)."

Opposition politician Assad Volcy was surrounded by a crowd of protesters as he stood in front of the U.N. office.

"We came to tell Jovenel's bosses, the people who are working with him, today the people of Haiti are terminating Jovenel's term," Volcy told VOA Creole. "If the white people, the international community love him so much, (then) take him. Let him go lead the United States. Let him go lead Brazil. Let him go lead the OAS."

What sparked protests

Demonstrators scuffle with the police during a protest calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise, near the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Oct. 4, 2019.
Haiti has been plagued for months by an increase in violence, a fuel shortage, high inflation, double-digit unemployment and food insecurity.

Weekly protests have negatively impacted businesses, schools and tourism.

President Moise is blamed for being unable to turn the situation around. He has denied corruption allegations and insists he will not resign. Instead, he ordered his acting prime minister, Jean Michel Lapin, to make new Cabinet appointments, and called for a national dialogue to discuss possible solutions for the country's problems.

The opposition refused and said Moise's departure is non-negotiable.

Core Group

Whistleblower and opposition Senator Saurel Jacinthe, viewed by some as a hero for outing lawmaker colleagues for accepting bribes for votes in parliament, joined the protesters in the Carrefour Aeroport neighborhood of the capital.

"The U.N., the Core Group is only waiting for one thing," he told VOA Creole. "They are consulting with different sectors to see if there is support for Jovenel. If all the sectors they consult with are against Jovenel, they will take the necessary measures."

The Core Group is comprised of the U.N. secretary-general's Special Representative for Haiti and the ambassadors of the United States, European Union, France, Canada, Brazil, Spain and the Special Representative of the OAS. Members have been meeting with Haitians from all sectors of society this week, in addition to President Moise, to hear grievances and opinions on how to help the country move forward.

Police presence

Protestors calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise raise their arms in front of a group of police in riot gear, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Oct. 4, 2019.
Unlike last Friday's protest in Port-au-Prince, when protesters attacked and looted police stations around town with little to no resistance from law enforcement, the police and special forces teams were highly visible as they patrolled the streets, at times aggressively.

VOA Creole reporter Matiado Vilme said she was injured after a "CIMO" (Corps d'intervention et de maintien d'ordre) agent grabbed her wrist and twisted it as she said she attempted to record a video in front of the U.N. office. Local journalists came to her rescue, yelling at the agent and calling on colleagues to film the attack so everyone could see what happened, she said. Francois Frantz, a reporter for KAPZYNEWS, said he also was pushed around.

"We always say that the police is aware that the people have a constitutional right to protest," Gary Desrosiers, spokesman for the National Police Force (PNH) told VOA Creole. "The police even has a duty to accompany and protect the protesters. Providing security for both the protesters and the citizens who are not protesting is a work in progress."

When reporters pressed him about why the officers were being so aggressive toward them, he responded that he was not in charge of the strategy for the day, but that police are trained to see things that civilians don't see.

To the north and south

Meanwhile, in the town of Jacmel, to the south, protesters put up roadblocks made from tree branches, rocks and tires during the early morning hours. Roads were only accessible on foot or by motorbike.

In Petit Goave, a rara band played as protesters marched through town to the beat of their music.

In Miragoane, protesters were joined by members of the Democratic Sector opposition group as they made their way around the city.

In Port-de-Paix, a large crowd filled the streets with anti-corruption banners in hand. One man held a poster that read, "We'll keep fighting until the corn ripens to untangle ourselves from the killer Jovenel." A drum beat accentuated by a horn filled the air.

In Jeremie, also in the south, protesters took to the streets as well.

Affiliate station reporter Charles Makenson said the protest was halted after an unidentified gunman opened fire on the crowd. At least three people were wounded, he said.

To the north in St. Marc, things turned violent as well. A group of protesters armed with rocks and bottles marched to the local jail and pelted it. They were unsuccessful in breaking in. Another group of protesters threw rocks at the national bank, shattering its windows. They also burned a pile of trash to block the main road.

Damages

PNH spokesman Desrosiers told VOA Creole he was not prepared to give an estimate on damages nor how many people were injured or killed during Friday's protests.

Protesters plan to be back in the streets on Sunday.

Probably not. People still dont understand the haitian troops dont work for poeple of Haiti but its hard to realized that your own police and military force is conspiring against they country

The troop force is the one that physically enforcing US imperialism. Jovenel is just some yes man for the other groups that want to pimp Haiti out

The US also have the haiti military on standby.

If some how they get jovenel out. The haitian elite and haiti private sector/ economic forum will look for the next puppet . now thats when the shyt going hit the fan and everything will go down... Last straw

The haitian elite and core group is pushing Haiti to no return and when that point hit.... people will die from otherside

There needs to be a thorough revolution to cleanse Haiti of this cancer. The opposition must not accept only accept Jovenel Moise resignation. They must take down all those corrupt politicians and ex military and police. There has to be a new military and police that serves the interest of the people not the US and the Core group. It might have to take a civil war for this to happen. The opposition has to make serious inroads with Russia and China that they have a lot to gain to side with people because the people are anti America. We know who our enemy is. They have a lot to gain to support the Haitian people geopolitically and economically.

Also the opposition have to wage a guerilla insurgency against the elites like how Castro did in Cuba. This game must end. Once Jovnel Moise is gone the elites will select a new president. It’s time for some people to die because far too long this game of the elites has gone on. Haiti needs a leftist revolution.

Getting China to help will be the difficult part as they don't usually interfere in non-East Asia political affairs. But we will see. The opposition whether Lavalas or Charles Moise has got to make those connections first with either Russia or China.

But yes a leftist revolution is badly needed in Haiti.
