Haiti Press Association Surprised No Judicial Action against Senator Féthière

The National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH) on Wednesday released a note condemning the climate of violence in Haiti and the indifference of Haitian authorities to address the issues. In its note, it expressed its surprise that justice officials had not moved forward on instructing a case against the facts of the shooting of an AP journalist and a senate security agent by a Senator Jean Marie Ralph Féthière (PHTK - Nord).

A note signed by ANMH President Frantz Duval reads, the ANMH "condemns with the utmost firmness the acts of violence that occur almost daily throughout the national territory for several weeks, in the complete indifference of the authorities."

The case of Senator Jean-Marie Ralph Féthière (PHTK - Nord), in particular, is cited. Senator Féthière fired his gun indiscriminately at a crowd in front of the Senate building on Monday. At least two were shot including Associated Press Photojournalist Dieu-Nailo Chery.

"The National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH) is surprised that Haitian justice has not seen fit to open an instruction to hear the senator and understand the circumstances that led him to use his weapon in a volatile environment, where his thoughtless gesture could have had regrettable circumstances and for the present crowd and for himself."

The Haitian authorities, our elected officials and appointed officials, give up their prerogatives, abandon their responsibilities to engage in the pursuit of objectives that discredit their function and ruin their mission, says the association led by the editor-in-chief on a daily basis, Le Nouvelliste, Frantz Duval.

La Saline Massacre: Top Gov't Officials Banned from Traveling

Travel bans were issued on Monday for the Departmental Delegate of the Ouest, Pierre Richard Duplan, and the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior, Fednel Monchéry, for their involvement in the massacre in La Saline which left dozens of citizens dead, many more wounded and a nation traumatized. The order was issued by Judge Chavannes Étienne nine months after the November 2018 tragedy and only after pressure from members of the U.S. Congress, the United Nations and France. The Jovenel Moïse administration has not made any comments, much less, taken any action regarding the incident and its officials.

The judge, in a correspondence to the Director of Immigration and Emigration dated July 22, 2019, said he took this decision by considering the open information prepared and conducted on the facts of criminal conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, assassination, arson, armed robbery and evasion perpetrated on the night of November 12 to 13, and at the request of the DCPJ which issued warrants against these two personalities of the Tèt Kale regime.
