Holmes was victim to a style that a lot of people didn't find appealing and made that remark about Marciano not being able to hold his jock strap. I think these were the only reasons people didn't have him in the top 5 discussion immediately after he retired. Add to this that people have short memories sometimes and all they could remember was Tyson for a bit, and Tyson looked like he was from another planet.
Like it's been said, his jab was vicious. Some people use their jabs for defense only. Some just use it to set up other punches. Holmes used it for that and to fukking hurt people. shyt on Wladimir Klitzchko's resume if you want, but he won several fights in the heavyweight division after being written off as a bum with a glass jaw. And he did it a great deal of the time using only his jab which was nowhere near as good as Larry's. H2H it's a great weapon.

holmes did virtually everthing better than ali. its why holmes could fight into his early 50s and is still sharp today. he had the fundamentals down. a young holmes used to whoop ali in sparring before he was ever a big name.
better jab (ali was outjabbed by norton on multiple occasions)
more variety of punches than ali (ali couldnt throw an uppercut or body shots)
better footwork (faster feet dont indicate better footwork - ali in his prime was dropped because of his footwork)
better defense that didnt rely on athleticism and puling straight back. (again prime ali was dropped because of this habit too)
ali had the biggest heart and was probably the most durable heavyweight of all time which allowed him to pull the rabbit out of his hat a few times. but theres no way he can beat a prime larry holmes. hes not going to win an outside boxing match, holmes had thr better jab with a bit longer reach and is very fast himself. he cant win in a dogfight inside, holmes was the better inside fighter.
holmes did that with a tore muscle in his left arm too

cause he the greatest
why? because he said so? hes in the top 3 at heavyweight so hes definetely not the greatest of all time. joe louis accomplished more at hw than ali. jack johnson was more skilled than ali and hit a lot harder. ali has nothing to trouble johnson or louis in head 2 head fights.

I need to see Holmes be able to nullify the jab and outjab a great Heavy who had great jab (like Ali did Liston) before i even entertain the notion of Holmes even being able to have a competitive fight with Ali.
Holmes had issues with the Truth's jab and his movement...and he's basically a B-level Ali/Holmes clone with no chin.

Ali, Joe Louis, and Holmes are arguably the top 3 HW's of all time.
Holmes may not be the greatest but he is up there and is usually underrated by the masses. He was pretty good to great in every category and that jab was legendary and one of a kind. It's not a shock statement to say that Larry Holmes would give any heavyweight trouble if both of them were in their prime at the same time.
Ali would knock Johnson str8 out..you can't be serious, man? LOL!
