He'd give any heavyweight in history a run for their money so the argument could be made...

I think Holmes, along with Holyfield match up the best H2H against most heavyweight greats.

They just have the right mixture of size, style, and physical attributes to give them a chance with anybody. Neither were crazy punchers, but could hurt you. Not too undersized to deal with giants like Klits, Fury, etc... No blazing speed, but fast enough. Great chins, could box and be aggressive too.

I mean how many prime heavyweight greats are we favoring over prime Holmes anyway.
Ali, Louis, Lewis, Tyson, Frazier?

He's 50-50 in those fights to me. :manny:

he wasnt a poor mans ali at all. technically he was better than ali.

He patterned his whole style around Ali's...and did almost nothing significantly better. Ali was a much more dynamic boxer in just about all facets. You can say Holmes threw a harder jab, was more effective in close quarters (didn't have to hold as much) and was a better body puncher...but everything else? :usure:

Footwork, defense, counter-punching, combination punching...think he had a slight edge in power too...but what really sets them apart is Ali's speed & athleticism

Ali also beat & faced a much stauncher level of opposition...Holmes didn't even make an attempt to completely clean out his division...a weak division at that (compared to the 70's) and unify the titles.

Actually set a precedent in boxing with that.

holmes did virtually everthing better than ali. its why holmes could fight into his early 50s and is still sharp today. he had the fundamentals down. a young holmes used to whoop ali in sparring before he was ever a big name.

better jab (ali was outjabbed by norton on multiple occasions)
more variety of punches than ali (ali couldnt throw an uppercut or body shots)
better footwork (faster feet dont indicate better footwork - ali in his prime was dropped because of his footwork)
better defense that didnt rely on athleticism and puling straight back. (again prime ali was dropped because of this habit too)

ali had the biggest heart and was probably the most durable heavyweight of all time which allowed him to pull the rabbit out of his hat a few times. but theres no way he can beat a prime larry holmes. hes not going to win an outside boxing match, holmes had thr better jab with a bit longer reach and is very fast himself. he cant win in a dogfight inside, holmes was the better inside fighter.

Holmes-Norton

Arguably the best fight Heavyweight match of all-time...my personal favorite

holmes did that with a tore muscle in his left arm too :wow:
