That’s not saying much since R&B has been considered a dead genre for years now.
Who considers R&B dead? :mjtf:
Because Chris Brown, Masego, H.E.R., Ty Dolla Sign, Kehlani, Jhene Aiko, Bryson Tiller, Thundercat, The Weekend, Tyler the Creator, Bilal, etc. are all selling well and making incredibly popular music.

You've got newcomers like Rodwave, Morray, reggie, Rachel Chinouriri, Chloe x Halle all making popular music too

This don’t make sense if anything that’s saying alot if somebody can go platinum multiple times in a genre that’s considered “dead”

There isn't money in R&B like it used to be, which is why you see other artist making songs that can cross over into other genre's of music. That's where the money is.

I saw Lil baby on the track list and shook my head. She has no idea who her core is
Having an incredibly popular and surprisingly versatile rap artist on an R&B album aimed at younger people isn't aiming at her core audience?

A lot of your favorite artist themselves hence them creating songs that blur genre lines that can be played on top 40 radio stations. Surely you've been attention and have noticed that a lot of genre's of music don't sound like the typical genre of music.

H.E.R was literally just on the CMT Awards a week ago performing with Chris Stapleton. There's a specific reasoning for that happening.

But that's been how all popular music has worked for the last 50 years.

The idea of "pure" genres of music, when at any given time the "genre" of music is itself derivative of earlier forms and influenced by contemporary popular sounds, is silly anyway.

Was there ever pure hip-hop and rap, when the records sampled were soul, jazz, R&B and gospel? What is R&B anyway - if Cab Calloway doesn't sound like Aretha Franklin, and neither of them sounds like Usher or Tevin Campbell?

There's no reason *not* to cross-over - and that doesn't mean R&B is "dead," or that H.E.R. isn't an incredibly popular artist.

A lot of nikkas are just :flabbynsick:

Tyler is not R&b
The weekend is pop
Chris has peaked an will never be better then what he is.
Masego is modern blues...not r&b
Kelani is this era's keisha cole

Actually I'm 29, so I wouldn't be considered as :flabbynsick:

The money is in top 40 of the billboard charts, which is what every artist is/should be aiming for. Creating a song that can get you on those charts and airplays is where the money is.

Unfortunately, R&B isn't that genre anymore outside of a few songs here and there. That's why people were pissed at artist like JT and Adele being hyped up as R&B artist and winning awards as other artist of those genres don't get that type of airplay on top 40 stations.

Also don't forget that numbers and sales don't mean shyt these days when you can pay to streams and other forms of sales manipulations. Even G-Eazy's camp got caught doing it a few months back.

I know it's her debut but with the amount of projects she's released, it seems like just another one of them. Not to mention, I feel as though there was no promo for this whatsoever. Some of her music is really good, though, so I'll be listening. "Come Through" is dope.

A lot of these are just opinions :yeshrug:
The Weeknd is both pop and R&B. And he makes R&B music. Tyler, Masego, and Kehlani all make R&B music. Chris Brown is still dropping platinum albums and singles damn near every year, and there are other artists like Jazmine Sullivan, SZA, and the others I mentioned that are making waves.

She is too intelligent for her demographic, if she sung about racks, getting trains ran on her, and swallowing nut, she'd get a Grammy ala Meg, Cardi, etc....

this. She’s in no mans land demographic wise. I respect her talent, but her music is a little too bumblegum for my age and she’s too serious an artist for the audience she’s marketed towards.
