CHARLIE HUNNAM MAY PLAY KING ARTHUR FOR DIRECTOR GUY RITCHIE
Pic would reunite him with PacRim's Elba.
27 AUG 2014 BY JIM VEJVODA
Director Guy Ritchie's long-gestating King Arthur movie is shaping up to be a Pacific Rim reunion of sorts as Charlie Hunnam is reportedly in negotiations to play the title role opposite Idris Elba as his mentor.
Deadline claims Hunnam, whose FX television series Sons of Anarchy comes to an end this year, is in "final negotiations" to play the fabled British monarch. Ritchie's King Arthur is envisioned as the first entry in a new franchise of films.

This particular King Arthur project has almost come together a few different times in the past. The first attempt was with Game of Thrones' Kit Harington and Robocop's Joel Kinnaman as Arthur and Lancelot, respectively.
The studio later tried to get the film off the ground with Colin Farrell as Arthur and Gary Oldman as Merlin.

Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch) is helming the film, with a script penned by Joby Harold (Awake). Guy Ritchie's King Arthur Lives Again
Revisit Camelot with a big budget retelling of King Arthur's story
by Amy Ratcliffe APRIL 11, 2014
Knights and maidens, it's time for a new version of the classic story of King Arthur.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that director Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) will indeed be putting his spin on the Camelot legend in a new film that will be released on July 22, 2016. The big budget re-imagining from Warner Bros. will supposedly be primarily influenced by Thomas Mallory's 1845 book, Le Morte d'Arthur, but specific plot details haven't been revealed.

Ritchie will also produce the movie alongside Lionel Wigram, Akiva Goldsman, Tory Tunnell, and Joby Harold. The latter is penning the script, and the film will be released in 2D and 3D.
It's been mentioned that there will be six films in the series, but only the first has been confirmed and given a release date. Warner Bros. probably needs to see how filming goes and what kind of financial returns they get from King Arthur before they greenlight that many movies. The material is definitely there, but they'll have to dive deep into the mythology to make the story last over six films.

Director Guy Ritchie Rumored to Be Developing a Six-Film King Arthur Series
Somehow, they’ll all still be heist movies. Kidding.
by Adam DiLeo JANUARY 28, 2014
Director Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) is allegedly circling a new movie based on the legend of King Arthur. Six of them, actually. The films would be big budget tentpoles for Warner Bros., with the first of them being written by Joby Harold (Awake) who also came up with the overall concept for the series.

The massive undertaking is the latest King Arthur project Ritchie has been attached to in recent years. The British director and partner Lionel Wigram previously had to abandon their efforts to develop a version of the story based on a script by John Hodge (Trainspotting). According to Deadline, that project fizzled when it began to look like another King Arthur movie David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, The Change-Up) directing was closer to getting the green light from Warner Bros.
Warners purchased the script for the Dobkin version, titled Arthur & Lancelot, for $2 million with the expectation of producing a $90 million film starring up-and-comers Joel Kinnaman (Robocop) and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones). The plug was pulled when it became clear the lavish production would actually cost around $130 million. Recent efforts to revive Arthur & Lancelot with Colin Farrell as Lancelot and Gary Oldman as Merlin have stalled. Thus we arrive at Ritchie and his rumored interest in directing the first film in Warners’ huge, six-part fantasy epic.

It’s hard to say if Ritchie, who is currently filming an adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, will ever get to make his Arthur movie(s), but both the director and the studio seem keen to get some version of Camelot back on the big screen. In addition to the three versions mentioned above, Warner Bros. at one point considered remaking 1981’s Excalibur with X-Men: Days of Future Past’s Bryan Singer attached to direct. And, apparently, plans are still moving forward for an unrelated “Harry Potter-style take” on the story. So there’s that.
