I just got around to seeing this. I think Viggo and Ali elevated what could have been a very corny movie. The performances by both actors was excellent and they had terrific chemistry. Look I'm sure there were a few liberties taken with the story as is the case of most biopics/historical movies, so this is no different. Marershala Ali is quickly establishing himself as one of the best actors out now.

There are very few actors that could've elevated a movie this average into what it was.

As for the movie, I agree with you. I doubt there were more liberties than any other bio pic. But I don't think the movie insulted, or portrayed Shirley as anything less than a proud black man. From all account, he certainly had his ways about him. Hell, I think it may have been closer to Lip's version than whatever his family thinks.

I honestly think this movie plays out like how Lip would've told the story of the trip to his son (who wrote the movie).

Like Lip would be on some: 'So we got some KFC down the road, and I tell ya, the way Shirley was holding that chicken between his fingers, he looked so afraid to get his hands dirty you'd think the man ain't never eaten fried chicken in his life before!' :russ:

And the son was listening on some: 'You know, that would actually be pretty funny if it were true.' :ehh::ohhh:

So that's how he wrote it down and that ended up being the movie.

Just seen this movie. Thought it was fantastic. A lot of people on this board just live to find offence in everything. A few scenes were a bit heavy handed imo but it's a fukkin MOVIE

But Ali, wow. In the first scene I wasn't sure if he was perhaps overplaying the character but by the end I was blown away. This guy just dominates the screen, magnetic presence. He definitely got next
Ali has now.

He's about to win a second oscar and prolly an emmy

This movie was wack but Mahershala and Viggo deserve another chance together. Their chemistry was actually pretty good and saved this from being cut off.

INT. MANY CAREFUL EXPLANATIONS LATER

VIGGO attends an INTERVIEW for a JOB working for famed composer MAHERSHALA ALI.

MAHERSHALA ALI

Mr. Mortensen, I am told you're rather good at violence. I generally oppose violence, but since my concert tour will take me through the Deep South, it may prove useful. If not, you will serve as my driver and valet, as well as my student of etiquette and correspondence. Your wages will be $100 a week, which today would be worth $837.44, or enough for less than a quarter of your New York City rent.

VIGGO MORTENSEN

Well, dat sounds purdy good, but I don't like de idea of takin' eat-a-cat lessons

Saw the scene on HBO where Viggo Mortenson punched out the cop, like an old John Wayne movie, and I just changed the channel.
