This was much better than the trailer let on. Yes, if all the shyt about them exaggerating Shirley's estrangement from black culture is true, they did him somewhat wrong, but I don't think he was that misrepresented. He was shown to be a proud man who was caught between cultures but felt strongly about putting himself out of his comfort zone to try and enact change.

Either way, the movie as it is works, regardless of how true or not true to the facts it is. Farrelly got a good balance between the comedy and the drama and Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali got great chemistry. Both did amazing jobs with their roles.

Hollywood loves safe movies and this might be the safest movie of the year as far as the predicted contenders go.

This immediately struck me. Just a couple years ago Selma was basically banished from awards season for being "historically inaccurate" just because some White people caught some feelings about how a single bit White character was portrayed.

In reality, it turned out that Selma was the most accurate Oscar-nominated biopic made in the last decade:

Selma is 100% historically accurate, The Imitation Game not so much...

Now, once again a "based on a true story" pic is being put out there despite it's entire premise being a distorted version of reality....and it's cleaning up all the awards.

Just seen this movie. Thought it was fantastic. A lot of people on this board just live to find offence in everything. A few scenes were a bit heavy handed imo but it's a fukkin MOVIE

But Ali, wow. In the first scene I wasn't sure if he was perhaps overplaying the character but by the end I was blown away. This guy just dominates the screen, magnetic presence. He definitely got next

I just got around to seeing this. I think Viggo and Ali elevated what could have been a very corny movie. The performances by both actors was excellent and they had terrific chemistry. Look I'm sure there were a few liberties taken with the story as is the case of most biopics/historical movies, so this is no different. Marershala Ali is quickly establishing himself as one of the best actors out now.
