Power: Power refers to the ability of one global actor to influence the action of another global actor. The USA exerted its military strength in the Asia-Pacific through the hard power means of miltary exercises with its ally South Korea in July 2010.
Soft power: The ability to shape the actions of other global actors, most commonly exercised through diplomacy, culture, policies and history. E.g China historic trade deal with Taiwan, 2010.
Hard power: Power exercised through cooercion, or threatened acts of coercion, to influence the actions of other global actors. For example the 2014 economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the US and other states in response to the Crimean incursion.
