A Cook County set bond at $500,000 Saturday for a 64-year-old woman who allegedly commissioned her grandson to kill her husband as he awaited a ride to a dialysis appointment last month.
Janet Strickland was not in court for the hearing at the 26th and California courthouse because she was being treated at a local hospital for lung disease, authorities said.
On numerous occasions the grandmother discussed wanting to get rid of her 72-year-old husband, according to authorities. She said she was sick of him and wanted him dead even discussing the plan to kill her husband days before his March 2 killing.
Janet Strickland let her 19-year-old grandson take her husbands gun, and let the teen use her car the morning of the murder.
The grandson also named William Strickland shot his grandfather six times in the back as he emerged from the South Side home all three shared in the early morning hours of March 2. Janet Strickland, who looked on as her grandson killed his grandfather, then grabbed a Horseshoe casino bag of money that belonged to the older Strickland, authorities said.
She then took her grandson on a shopping spree, even buying him a car, according to authorities. Police also said the younger Strickland took his grandfathers wallet after the killing and spent money on a new phone, gym shoes and tattoos.
He was arrested little more than a week ago and charged in his grandfathers slaying. Hes being held in the Cook County jail without bail.
