This is a long shot. But this story A SONG OF ICE & FIRE maybe a RE-TELLING OF EVENTS. Bran might've gotten a chance to fix past mistakes, and went back in time, and what we are now seeing is what Bran has changed/is changing, so the world won't end in THE LONG NIGHT (ruled by the White Walkers)

hells no not head to head. cutting down the undead is useless and for every one of you they kill is one more for their team so their numbers grow almost exponentially. look how they made light work with the wildlings at hardhome. at this point the only way to defeat them is dragons, taking out white walkers and the night king first, or strategically using fire on the battle field.
