I agree with both of yall, but that's the way it is in the NBA. the Superstars like Lebron, Kobe(in his prime), etc get underpaid their worth while guys like Dragic get overpaid.

Riley painted himself into a corner with trading 2 #1 draft picks for him, you can't lose him. Hopefully the market sets itself properly and we don't have to overpay but :manny: he's a 29 year old second tier Point Guard. what did Kyle Lowry get last year?

Those first round picks are a sunk cost. Theyre gone regardless.......thats no reason to overpay dragic.

How can a team compete for a title with dragic eating 20 percent of your cap room?

Not sure but just tossing them away to be a 30-40 win team with no draft picks to build for the future will scare any good free agents away so you're screwed then. Who wants to be the nets basically?

when you trade #1 picks, you're in win now mode(3 year window imo.) realistically what better options do they have at Point Guard? Pat beveley? brandon knight? rondo? Dragic is better than all of those guys.

Heat are thinking they can compete in the East with

Whiteside
Bosh
Deng
Wade
Dragic

besides a healthy Cleveland, what other team in the East is definitely better? aside from just flat out tanking the next 2 seasons, we out of options

This situation is sad because dragic is straight about to finesse the Heat for a max deal because they have no choice other than to sign him...Kind of makes me wonder if they were better off going after Lawson instead...

dragic isn't worth a max deal but in this situation he is going to receive it because the Heat have no other choice other than to admit they wasted 2 x 1st for a half season rental in which they didn't make the playoffs.

On the bright side he is talented and if healthy the heat are talented enough to compete for a conference finals bid but most likely have just entered Treamill status.

Dragic's worth isn't simply how much he'd get on the market. It's tied to the team's ability to replace his value and their plan to compete. The Heat didn't have enough $ to get a quality PG this offseason, so they had to deal for one. Now they have a quality PG and his bird rights. If they let him walk because they want to give him $12-14 mil per vs. $16-18 mil per, then they won't be able to replace his value at all. They'll be over the cap or close to it. So they'd be stuck with an old vet minimum player, Shabazz, and Chalmers. Why would that be better? Because in a year they'd have more cap space? So would nearly every other team in the league.

And @houston911 is right that the picks shouldn't come into play here. Those are gone. But trading the picks is a clear indication of how much Riley values Dragic. Riley clearly thinks a roster of Dragic, Bosh, Wade, and Whiteside would be very appealing to KD in 2016. And it shows his commitment to winning and his ability to make big deals. They have to keep him because he's a big part of the plan to compete now and possibly land KD in a year.

I don't think he's going to get the max, because I think they brought him in with the understanding of their future plans, including getting KD. I say that because the trade scenario this year was clearly a scheme to get Dragic here, so they've been coordinating.

Riley and Andy Elisburg probably have a $ they need to be below in order to sign KD, so they have to squeeze a few million out of Dragic, Wade, and whoever else. But that doesn't mean that they won't pay over market value if Dragic says no to taking less for the chance to get KD. They just did that to keep Bosh.

Dragic is way more valuable to the Heat than he is to other teams, so whatever other teams would offer him doesn't matter, unless it's more than they're offering. Then it tilts things upward.

it only works if Wade was willing to accept something like 10 million per after this season, and if both Dragic and Whiteside got a little less than what most think they will want.

basically a pipe dream

It doesn't

Which is why they need to draft Stanley Johnson, give Wade 3 year 50 mil, sign Javale McGee to the backup C and sign some vet min shooters like a Mike Dunleavy.

Then take your chances in the East.

Goran Dragic made $7.5 million this year.

He's gonna sign a 5 year $90 million deal or something like that and make like $16 million per season.

Why should a hall of famer take less than dragic?

Realistically, I can't imagine any team offering wade any better than 4 years 75 mil outside of the heat

They can hardball him I guess

Who is willing to pay dragic the max though? You're bidding vs yourself

Dragic to philly would make some sense

They can hardball him but that shyt will look bad as hell on the organization...In fact they probally should just go ahead and pay him.
