The republican party is lost. in recent years they have been moving further and further to the right, which fires up their base and helps them win elections short term, but in the long run they are loosing support from most independents and some less conservative republicans. This makes them have to continue to pander to the crazy fringe in order to stay relevant. So they have to align themselves with the crazies that don't care about logic or facts, they only care about hate, and bigotry.
