Is godson not grown man rap?

im tired of y’all spewing this bullshyt about LIG being the first grown man album or some weird shyt

Listen, could you imagine writing your deposition?
Divorce lawyer telling you how this thing gonna be ending?
"With you paying out the ass, and I'm talking half
Not some but half, no serious, half"
Half of your soul, half of your heart you leaving behind
It's either that or die, I wanted peace of mind
And all I seen was selfish cowards, under they breath
Saying "why did Nas trust her?", but look at yourself, speak louder bro
You live with your baby moms and scared to make an honest woman out of her

This morning I got a call, nearly split my wig
This social network said "Nas go and get ya kid"
She's on Twitter, I know she ain't gon post no pic
Of herself under dressed, no inappropriate shyt, right
Her mother cried when she answered
Said she don't know what got inside this child's mind, she planted
A box of condoms on her dresser then she Instagrammed it
At this point I realized I ain't the strictest parent
I'm too loose, I'm too cool with her
Shoulda drove on time to school with her
I thought I dropped enough jewels on her
Took her from private school, so she can get a balance
To public school, they too nurture teen talents
They grow fast, one day she's ya little princess
Next day she talking boy business, what is this
They say the coolest playas and foulest heart breakers in the world
God gets us back, he makes us have precious little girls

LIG laid the blueprint (no pun intended) for 4:44

LIG is the epitome of grown man rap

Idk how old you are breh...but if you can't discern the diff in wisdom from this album compared to his previous album, idk what to tell you...this is the album where he became an elder statesman of rap

Nas has always been mature but LIG was shyt fathers, husbands, gangsters, fly nikkas & hustlers could all relate to

I think God's Son has a couple prime Nas verses/songs that are better than anything on Life Is Good (Get Down, Made You Look) but overall as an album? Life Is Good is better and more consistent. Honestly my only issue with Life Is Good isn't really music based (outside of Summer On Smash lol). All the Nas albums on Def Jam had weird marketing gimmicks that didn't really deliver on the actual album content. HHID has some songs about "hip hip is dead" but doesn't really say anything interesting, and is full of random tracks with no ties to the concept. Untitled has much more narrative focus but is marred by some weak tracks and bad-to-average production that doesn't fit the tone of the in-your-face marketing AT ALL. There's nothing aggressive about most of that album IMO. And then Life Is Good is billed at this Here, My Dear homage yet barely discusses relationships and is focused far more on NY/hip hop nostalgia than Kelis.

Seriously go listen to Here, My Dear. Even the party single is tied into the album narrative. It's a funky yet painful and focused breakup album. LIG is not a breakup album.

In hindsight it’s God’s son.

Gotta remember that at the time God sons was seen as a somewhat of a let down bc it followed a classic. Whereas LIG benefitted from coming off the heels of just ‘solid’ Nas albums

But when I replay them LIG has songs that God’s son era Nas could never get away with. Nas was dinged for 1 song like Hey Nas, meanwhile LIG had some God awful songs that were extremely forced (the Anthony Hamilton and Mary j songs, Loco-Motive 🤢 )

The best songs on either album are probably on LIG, but in total all around I say God’s Son

The highs on "God's Son" are higher than "Life Is Good". The lows are about equal. You could argue they are both strong 4 Mics but I've raised my "God's Son" reviews up to 4.5 after all these years, the replay value is too strong.

LIG laid the blueprint (no pun intended) for 4:44

LIG is the epitome of grown man rap

"Streets Disciple" already tapped into the Grown Man energy before "Life Is Good" as far as mature subject matter. It was a Grown Man album long before "LIfe Is Good". He talked about Marriage (How many rap songs talk about the joys of getting married? I'll wait). He incorporated family themes and relationships, his daughter and had multiple songs with his Father on the album. Shoot he made the song with Pops a damn single. It don't get more grown man than that. "LIfe is Good" deal with the drama of marriage. "Street's Disciple" Focused more on the union. But to your point, Yes NaS clearly influenced Jay to make that switch subject matter wise. Though you could argue Jay tried to switch to Grown Man on "Kingdom Come". Even then you'd still have to give "Street's Disciple" the nod.
