They did have experts there to help make it authentic, but the problem is that even today we are still finding out more and more about dinosaurs look and behavior. The theories are stilll changing based on new evidence. At the time most of the stuff was probably pretty accurate, but even by Jurassic Park 3 they had put some feathers on the velociraptors in light of new findings.
