While Crowe’s Maximus character met his end in the classic original film, Gladiator 2 will follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius.

This could be great or terrible. I'm hoping it's great.

WTF? "Gladiator" is one of the best movies of this Century. It's perfect as is and doesn't need to be touched. There have been rumors about this sequel for the last decade but nobody thought it could happen and the rumored plots just didn't sound right. If Maximus had lived the entire movie would of been different. The weight of his death made the ending better. Russell Crowe's performance was Epic in this film. Sometimes movies just don't need sequels and they work fine as standalone. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot you can do with the whole "Gladiator" concept as far as fights and stuff. But whoever plays the Gladiator is going to be in Russell's shadow. Maybe Ridley has a few tricks left with this concept but this isn't the type of the film that needs to be "Franchised" per say.
