this is interesting.

So I met Gillie when I was 16-17 years old and I had just got into Wharton. He used to be on my mixtapes back in the day. I remember he congratulated me for getting into Wharton and told me I was dope. Gillie's no dummy but I think he's only seeing the narrow view.

Like everything else in life, college is what you make it but what college does provide is a strong network, it allows you to expand your horizons, learn about yourself and it provides options......options you don't have with just a high school diploma. Whatever you want to do in life, college will help you get there better with it as opposed to without it. Look at the difference between DJ Envy and going to Hampton or DJ Drama going to Clark Atlanta and how their education benefited them vs your average DJ who didn't go. Look at Puff......his entire crew at Bad Boy went to Howard, D. Dot, Harve Pierre, etc and they were able to build a base on campus to help them grow.

There's just no better environment for a 17-21 year old young adult to try to make something of themselves and be around like minded individuals.I came into college wanting to be a DJ and to work in the music industry and I was able to develop all sorts of skills and connections to help me get there.

I was throwing events and djing everything in college and built up a network of people who helped me win after I graduated. When I wanted an interview at Bad Boy, I could connect with the CFO of Bad Boy because his son went to Wharton. When I wanted a job on the radio station, I went on the alumni database and contacted the CEO of Radio One.

At some point I no longer wanted to be in the music industry anymore and instead of being stuck like an old rapper who's hanging on I was able to use my skills, knowledge and connections that I learned from college to pivot. Those Stat 101 and stat 102 classes I thought were meaningless.......became the source of new career in sports analytics, sports betting and became the thing that help me pivot into sports media and getting a job working at The Ringer. I learned all sorts of shyt in college in and out of the classroom........Most people will say the stuff you learn outside of the classroom is important but I look at how much I benefited being exposed to things I normally wouldn't have taken an interest in. I never would have thought about statistics if I never took it in college but I gained just as much from econ, accounting, philosophy, etc.

I have friends who didn't go to college and I see all the things they missed. They don't have a network of brilliant people from all over the world who can help them in their career. Their worldview is kinda narrow because they never really left their hometown and most of their network is in their same city. They don't have skills they can pivot to. Sure you can make good money working a blue collar job or a trade but your options to do anything else is limited......because of my degree and all the connections I've made and knowledge I've attained, I can damn near pivot to anything.
What you say is real. However the bolded is moreso about you, your major, and your networking skills than you going to college. I know plenty of folks that went to college that feel stuck or frustrated. Based on what you said, a person like yourself woulda figured shyt out even without a degree. Whereas, you got plenty of folks with degrees and no network or marketable skills and no idea how to pivot. You have your jobs that require certain education (medical, legal, education, tech, finance etc.) but a lot of jobs come down to your ability to sell yourself and/or your network.

Also. Gillie DID got to college. Just so y’all know.

These jobs was out here requiring a masters and 2-3 years experience for ENTRY pay. Mix that with all the debt u leave with. Unless ur SURE of ur job track when u leave school. Blindly going to school and racking up all that debt to get all them degrees is stupid as fukk. Is college great in some ways? Yup. Is a college degree overrated? Damn straight. There’s prolly plenty of college graduates on this very site right now who lack basic comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Again that's for the most part because of the major they chose or didn't utilize the networking and resources at their disposal.

Those examples you're using are disingenuous because 99.99% out here won't ever be those guys or even close to it. Even someone like Gille Da Kid is disingenuous because the majority of people won't be even close to what he's done either.

You'd be better off using regular non-famous people to prove your point instead of examples you currently used.
I can’t use regular people because y’all don’t know anyone who I know. I’m speaking as someone who is a boss and hire people everyday. Most of the people I know who making 70k and up ain’t college graduates. They either went to trade schools or they networked and have experience.

You're naming the unicorns man. 88% of millionaires have a college degree. It's definitely going to be higher for billionaires.
Did they GRADUATE? What degrees do they have? See that’s the difference. Going to school vs obtaining a bunch of degrees. Bottom line is with the way the workforce is trending. Blindly going to college and getting a degree ain’t gonna help shyt. It’s just gonna add to the headache.

He's not allowed to play the dummy card.

And I'm speaking as someone who has a Bachelor's and MBA in my major and career. You can mention what those people do for a living, so don't use that as an excuse breh.

You're also overlooking the important aspect that the majority of those people who are exceling without have intangibles that other people just don't have. That shyt isn't as easy as you're making it sound or else everyone out here would be doing it.

Even then, those people out here without those degrees including yourself are more than likely leaning on people who do especially in the financial side of the things where you need degrees and qualifications to do.

Yeah I def felt stuck or frusrated coming out of school when the recession hit. The biggest thing I realized was that it was on me to figure it out and make a better life. I've always gone after things I've been passionate about and turned those into jobs so my work has always been authentic to me.

if you arent doing something specific, engineering, IT, you shouldnt go to college in 2023. its not worth the loans

Or just get a decent degree from a cheap school if you don’t want to go the trade route.

There are plenty of state schools that cost less than 8-10k per year. And there are also community colleges and tech schools that are even cheaper that have programs to get you to those state schools in two years.

People need to stop going to college for clout or to make their parents happy and actually have a plan. And schools need to do a better job coming up with realistic plans for their students.

The way I see it this is just a anecdote from Gillie. He could be telling the truth from his perspective, but statistically speaking you are more likely to do better financially with a college degree than without it.

There isn’t a reason to argue over this, it’s just Gillie’s opinion based on what he’s seen.

The kirk to the fields
There's this new phenomenon where famous people, especially those in fields that traditionally are perceived as "dumber" i.e. rappers, boxers, and football players, feel the need to overcompensate and offer their opinion on things they know nothing about.

So, they spout pseudo-intellectual nonsense that they think is contrarian because it's the easiest way for even dumber people to think that celebrity is smart.
