:hubie: I’m an independent and unbiased third party American. Americans do not grow up eating tomato rice. It is not significant to our palette. Whether or not y’all add additional spices to it or not.

And I’m not even sure If rice is a staple in our diets. When I was young, we would have rice like once every two weeks and it was eaten with a gravy or roux, never plain. And we would add additional meat or vegetables to it. Which is why Senegalese Jollof closely resembles the jambalaya Aframs from the Gulf would have been exposed too.

As an adult, I don’t cook or eat rice except if I’m having ethnic food - Chinese, Indian, Mexican, African, etc.

I think Nigerians/Ghanaians fondness over Jollof is more because it’s a staple in your diets than because it’s actually good (which to me is quite plain, I typically have to mix in goat, lamb, or whatever else protein I’m having with it to be able to eat it.)

actually its not .... thing is Jollof rice in Nigeria isnt something you eat regularly its more "party" food ....

The thing about Jollof is its the one food that West Africans share in common...... Our dishes are completely different from each other so there is nothing to argue about with regards to food ..... Nigerian arent eating kenkey and ghanians arent eating Amala .....

off the top of my head I cant think of dishes we share in common

Liberians make Kala which Nigerians call puff puff but those are party/market snacks and not dishes.

At every Nigerian restaurant I’ve been to, they serve either pounded yam or Jollof as one of the side dishes to the main entree, so I mistakenly thought rice is eaten regularly with every meal similar to the Chinese.

We do share some dishes but they're mostly tribal dishes the Hausa eat like ayoyo, suya, tuwo, and kuka.

As for national dishes overall, then yeah you're right, we don't have much in common outside fufu, stew, and jollof.
