Vanes Martirosyan: Canelo is a Cheater, Golovkin is a Gentleman
By Alexander Gordopolov
Junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan made his play for a big opportunity and he landed it.
On May 5th at the StubHub Center in California, Vanes will move up to the middleweight division to challenge IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in an HBO televised main event.
Vanes replaces Mexican supertar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who was forced to withdraw from the contest after testing positive for banned substance clenbuterol back in February.
Vanes was preparing to fight in a WBC final eliminator at 154-pounds, but the World Boxing Council was having trouble securing an opponent to face him in the ordered bout.
When the fight with Golovkin came up, Vanes jumped on it.
"I think this is just a great opportunity for me. I've been waiting for this moment. I'm very happy to get this fight. I was born a fighter. That's why I'm fighting. I'm always ready for battle," Vanes said.
Regarding Canelo, Vanes does not believe his claim of eating contaminated meat as the cause for the positive drug tests.
The Armenian boxer would love to teach Canelo a less in the ring. He may get his chance, if he pulls off the huge upset. Canelo, who was handed a six month suspension on Wednesday, will be ready to fight in September and the Golovkin-Vanes winner will be a frontrunner to face him.
"I would punish Alvarez in the ring for what he did. Of course, he's a cheater. Alvarez knows perfectly well what he uses, of course, he is a fraud," Vanes said.
On the side, Vanes has nothing but good things to say about his upcoming opponents.
"As a fighter, Golovkin is a huge force, he has excellent skills. I respect him as a person. I met him a couple of times, he is a real gentleman," Vanes said.
No one ever has a bad thing to say about him. People here just let their feelings about Abel and how HBO loves him affect their view.
Which one of them is Mexican?
Trash fight. Vanes is a 154 who hasn't fought in 2 years. Unless GGG carries him or shows more aging, the fight should be done in under 7.
Vanes: I'll Test Golovkin's Chin, Not Run Like a 'Bad Steak' Guy!
Junior middleweight Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) has promised to upset the odds on May 5th, when he challenges WBC, IBF, IBO, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs).
Their contest was set less than a week ago, for May 5th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Vanes replaces Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who was suspended for six months after testing positive for clenbuterol.
Vanes is promising to fight Golovkin in toe to toe action.
He doesn't plan to fight in a manner like Canelo, who used a lot of movement in last September's controversial twelve round split draw with Golovkin at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"I'm not afraid of Gennady. I'm psyched to fight him. This is why I became a fighter. I'm not the only one taking this fight on short notice. Everyone has a soft spot. I'll find his. I have no fear. We are going to war -- Mexican Style. Two trains colliding. We both love the Mexican Style of fighting. We're both hard headed and heavy handed. To me, it's not a real fight without a lot of Mexican fans. I'm not fighting to survive. I'll be fighting to win," Vanes said.
"I don't run like the guy who pretended to eat a bad steak. Let's see how Gennady reacts to a fighter who doesn't move away after being hit. Gennady's chin hasn't been tested the way I'd like to test it."
Vanes explains that at one point, several years ago, he was the mandatory challenger for one of Canelo's world titles at junior middleweight - and the Mexican boxer had little to no interest in fighting him.
That situation made him question the courage of Canelo, and he views him as an easier fight.
"Canelo is an easier fight than Gennady. Gennady has a fan-friendly style. Canelo ran from my mandatory challenge. That says a lot about him. That tells you everything about him," Vanes said.
