Going to the movies and watching Roots or Django and expecting to learn about Black history is retarded. You can read a book written by people who know what they are talking about.

Exactly. You mean a made for tv special in The Roots is oversimplified and that a movie fashioned after a Spaghetti Western in Django Unchained is over the top and inaccurate? Wooooord ........?:comeon:

In this case, yes.

Really? A slave could have A. Procured Guns, B. Traveled safely from plantation to plantation killing slaveowners in his way and C. NOT killed by a mob of 100 white people and beaten to death the second he did anything the white man didn't like? Black people in general were powerless, completely, in this era.

This is akin to a jewish person who escaped a concentration camp and killing nazis from camp to camp. Listen, I'm going to see the movie because it's going to be entertaining simply because tarantino is a great film maker but I do find a problem with romanticizing something as terrible as slavery. That being said while spike lee makes great movies he's a fakkit and a hypocrite.

I understand where you coming from bruh... Trust me..

I am not trying to make slavery out to be less than what it was...

Maybe humanely is the wrong choice of words, however, if you've ever been locked up in an over crowded county jail, or a poorly run penitentiary, you would probably agree with me that its not an environment conducive for positive human development, however, you get 3 meals and a cot and have the opportunity to work on your health.......

Black people must view this with a keen eye....A lot of Europeans have condemned their souls to damnation for these acts and we as black people must know exactly what crimes against humanity were committed against us and for what reasons...

What does 3 hots and a cot have to do with slavery? :beli:

Youre still wrong both in your thinking and your "facts"

Black slaves didn't have a chance to "work on their health", they were working from sun up to sun down against their will and getting table scraps :why:

And I'm not sure how serving time for a crime you most likely committed, NOT doing hard manual labor for free, and having 3 square meals of a state mandated minimum nutritional content is LESS humane than the conditions slaves experienced

But keep "correcting" us... its clear you have the "inside scoop" and are in no way "biased" :biggaplease::biggaplease::biggaplease::biggaplease:

My Grandma is 97 years old. My Great Grandma grew up as a slave...

My Grandmother has writings that go back as far as 1901 that contains the trials and thoughts of my Great Grandmother...

We are fed a media depiction that for self serving reasons will not accurately capture the true brutality and purpose of chattel slavery...

But you just keep on believing that white folks did it solely because they hate nikkas so much....

I'm not saying what you said isn't true, I'm saying it doesn't matter if it's true. Slavey might have been all business for white people but it was damn sure personal to African Americans. You think slaves would have cared that the reason why they were forced into labor was because of economics or out of hatred? They had no rights and were suffering, who cares what the reason was.

First post. Shout out to all members of the Coli

There's been a lot of discussion about Quentin Tarantino and Blacks in his movies. Dude just took it to a whole 'notha level.

When Director Spike Lee said that he wouldn’t be supporting Quentin Tarantino‘s ‘Django Unchained,’ my reaction was simple (and said with one raised eyebrow):

“[Lee] has had a Black woman play a crackhead, a Black man get drunk and kill his wife, a Black woman make a living having phone sex with wealthy, White men and a Black teenager have a threesome with White women, but ‘Django’ is what’s disrespectful to our ancestors?

“Go figure.”

Now Tarantino is the recipient of the other raised eyebrow.

The fearless — some might say reckless — director says that Alex Haley’s “Roots” is “inauthentic.”

Yes, clutch your pearls and grab the smelling salts. “Roots,” that Black cultural touchstone that makes White Americans glance at their Black comrades with trepidation after BET plays it on repeat over the holidays, has been deemed “inauthentic” by white as the driven snow Tarantino.

“When you look at Roots, nothing about it rings true in the storytelling, and none of the performances ring true for me either,” said Tarantino. “I didn’t see it when it first came on, but when I did I couldn’t get over how oversimplified they made everything about that time. It didn’t move me because it claimed to be something it wasn’t.”

But slavery contextualized as a Spaghetti Western is authentic storytelling?

Quentin, as someone who believes that you will be mentioned in the same breath as Andy Warhol and Truman Capote when it comes to mastery of their respective arts, I say this with respect:

Have a seat. As a matter of fact, buy all of the tickets to a showing of ‘Django’ and just spend the entire movie going from chair to chair having seats.

Just because you pay Black people a lot of money to say “******” a lot of times on camera does not make you an authority on what rings true about slavery.
