I know this firsthand. When I was a child, my entire community was branded as spies and saboteurs, justifying our internment inside barbed wire camps for years without due process, trial or charge.

@georgetakei this is much more like a witch hunt, where you could be executed based only on an accusation, than any of the actions against Donald Trump that he loves to call witch hunts. He was always given due process.

yacc143@mastodon.social
@RichSPKMore than due process.More than once special considerations because of politics. Combine that with the detail that he generally had enough money for lawyers. And a SCOTUS that he himself stuffed with his men. Don't think there is much more of a very easy mode for defendants in the USA than that.@georgetakei

@georgetakei everybody was aware of this "terrorist" label BS since the US came up with patriot act and similar "ideas". I predicted such actions since then... While most people applauded catching terrorists, almost nobody in charge thought about how easy it is to slap that label onto somebody you don't like. It's a tactic. much like nazis are calling everybody slightly more left then they are(which is basically every non-nazi) a child molester... They know that there is no viable defense in both cases, truth be damned.

@jack_of_sandwich @georgetakei likely... but there must have been some opposition to it back then? I can see how they would not want to vote against anything "anti terror" because they would be labelled as "supporting terror" instead.

@georgetakei this is because they are setting the stage for what you and many others went through when you were younger to happen on just as broad a scale... some of the people being arrested under this not-so-new policy arent even from Venezuela, they only unfortunately look south american (unfortunate by the standards that they are getting arrested, detained, put into inhumane detainment conditions, and then shipped to the prisons in El Salvador ) initially they were using the idea of "appears to be a gang member" and then they discovered that the gang they are targeting doesnt use membership tattoos.. and they realized that was just the information they needed to get in order to do mass detainment sweeps... "looks like" "could be" and "might be" are enough for arrests these days apparently

and while they are currently focusing that on immigrants, I have a feeling that its not going to take long before its anyone that trumpty dumpty feels is "undesirable"

@georgetakei I am so sickened by what my country and its government and people are doing right now that I'm finding it hard to live with myself. I wish more than anything there was something I could do to stop it, or even feel like I've done enough that I needn't fall on my sword for my failure to do so. We all must now live with the guilt of what we by our inaction have allowed to happen.

@georgetakei America is dying. 20 or 30 years from now the US will breakdown into States. It will be the beginning of the end. Hope I am not around to see my beautiful nation die.
21/39
@
gpilz@mastodon.social
@HolgerFiallo @georgetakei It won't breakdown into states because states are not unified political entities. Miami and San Francisco have far more in common with each other than they do with Pensacola and Modesto. The idea of red states and blue states is such an extreme oversimplification that it borders on being a lie. I think that what is going to happen will look much more like the Syrian civil war with dozens of factions intermixing and fighting to control resources and supply lines.

@gpilz @HolgerFiallo @georgetakei Back in the 80s a popular pastime in California was coming up with ways to divide the state along political lines. People usually concluded that there were at least 4 or 5 such regions in the state.

@jwstsooy @georgetakei They are blinded by the promise of short-term gains. Blinded by the promise of solutions. Blinded by grief. Spiteful because of grief, anger, hatred. Wanting to get even with someone who wronged them. Blaming others because it hurts to look at their own flaws. And evil exists too. Not all are misguided, some just want to hurt others and destroy everything they hold dear.

@georgetakei So many do not understand when you take away basic, American rights from one person, regardless of race, country of origin, gender, or religious beliefs...or what they say, it has a way of rebounding on everyone. At some point all of us can be affected. We could be arrested and taken away, or disappear, if the new administration doesn't like what I say...'The president is a jerk'. THAT might get a natural born American citizen neutralized. It CAN happen here.
