Twitter silently removes login requirement for viewing tweets

Ivan Mehta@indianidle / 10:30 AM EDT•July 5, 2023

Days after requiring users to log in to view tweets, Twitter has silently removed these restrictions. This means you can open Twitter links in a browser without an account.

We at TechCrunch noticed that tweet previews are unfurling in Slack and WhatsApp. Folks at Engadget noted that Twitter previews were visible on iMessage as well.

When Twitter started enforcing the login requirement, Musk said that he took these “temporary” measures to prevent data scraping.

“Temporary emergency measure. We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!” he said in a tweet.

The company hasn’t made any official announcement about allowing users to view links when you aren’t logged in or given any details on what measures it has taken to stop scraping.

Twitter’s move comes a day before Meta launches its own text-based app called Threads. Interestingly, Threads also briefly allowed users to view posts on the web without logging in before pulling the links. It is likely that people will be able to see Threads posts without an account when the app officially launches.

Over the weekend, Musk also put read limits of 1,000 posts per day for unverified users and 10,000 posts per day for verified users as a measure to battle data scraping. In a blog post, the company said that this change has affected a “small percentage of people” and “effects on advertising have been minimal.”

Threads is running smoother than Twitter, he’s got a problem on his hands.
Once threads passes the major emergency test, Twitter is fukked.

I hope Elon has his investors' money.

:pachaha: :mjlol:
After this initial exodus and honeymoon period, Threads biggest challenge will be to not go full Zuckerberg and be ass in terms of usability. It already runs on the algorithm putting whatever it thinks you'll like on your timeline, there's no option to have a chronological order to what you see and there's no "trending" bar to see what's going on outside your timeline.

It's way easier to hop on and use than Mastodon and the Instagram connection makes the transition quick and painless. If they can make your timeline more customizable I think it's game over for Twitter, but that's a big ass if considering we are talking about Zuck :hubie:

I dunno it looks like they crossed 10 million sign ups already and morning hasn’t hit yet
Yeah idk what he's talking about grand closing with that many people and it hasn't even been 12 hours :heh:

As I see it, it's an Instagram Twitter skin. The app details mention it's Instagram, nobody said it was separate. Anybody with an IG account already has a Threads too then one could reason if your IG/Threads profile is the same account, you would need to delete IG too, because there isn't a separate system for Threads.

It's different because everybody's used to different platforms for different communication but I don't see any controversy there

I'm willing to give more than 11 hours before I can say it's a flop or not lol. I was still in grade school when Twitter, IG, FB all launched but I'm pretty sure if folks threw the towel 10 hours in back then we wouldn't have social media at all

We know it's IG but it'll need to be more if it's gonna be around long term. You need to see what's trending and the super aggressive algo that hides content from smaller profiles and even flags accounts by mistake can't ruin Threads like it does IG since the space relies on real time content generation, but all that's already been brought up.

But the backbone of Threads, which is what we have so far, looks promising. Yeah it'd be great if it wasn't Meta but you can't control what's available, just like you can't control Musty destroying global platforms the nanosecond he got it. It is what it is
