Russia got warned ahead of time and turned a blind eye. Russia just stated their support for Assad is not unconditional. US did targeted strikes in response to a blatant war crime. I don't think this incident escalates tensions at all with Russia.

My guess is that this is just an action to look "tough" and bump up poll numbers. It was coordinated for a while and Russia probably has known for a while which is why we got the comment from Putin recently in regards to his support of Syria.

The Russian's response is muted at the moment. @FAH1223 may have some sources he can drop on what the news and reports are saying in this regard from Russia Media.
