I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorists, but does anybody find it strange that Assad decided to use chemical weapons at this point in the war?

I don't understand the logic of pissing off the world and the US by using chemical weapons.
I never for a second believed it was Assad just because of your point - timing. Why now? That's why I wished no one was warned about this and everyone in the vicinity caught that ballistic work.

Most likely ISIS blew the bomb up themselves under advice from US/Israeli handlers or Syria bombed a depot with chemicals stored in them.

Ok then what comes after Assad? Who rules the nation? The rebels? Which group HTS aka Al Nusra which is the strongest rebel group right now aka Al Qaeda in Syria? Ahrar al Sham whose spokesman said that they admire the way the Taliban rules Afghanistan? Jaish al Fateh which rules Idlib province and uses sharia law to rule? What will happen to the Alawites, christians, and Druze who support Assad because there is actual Jihadist and Islamist groups who want them dead? What of the Kurds will they get their own land if you do that Turkey get pissed. If you dont you have an army of 100k heavily arme dKurds that fought the rebels since 2012. This line of thinking is what led to the epic fail in Libya and Iraq. Get rid of a strongman and then there is chaos. Syria has so many armed factions that not one man can rule. Hell Assad doesn't run all of Syria. If you destroy the Baathist govt you destroy Syria because they employed the most people and provide services. Assad controls all the major cities. If you take him out then what happens to Homs,Hama,Aleppo, Damascus etc? If you get rid of Assad there will be more chaos. Intervention with no plan will lead to failure. Look at Libya and Iraq. You have no clue what is actually going on with the game of thrones that is Syria. It is not black and white.
This is signaling.

The US may ultimately be OK with Assad for the sake of stability.

But the chemical weapons thing does inspire him to stay in bounds, so to speak.

This doesn't mean we follow this up with a full blown invasion.

You're the only one sucking dikk here napoleon :yeshrug:
I'm not sure why you're OK with letting Assad use chemical weapons with no consequence.

but do you.

I'm glad the USA can slap that wrist and remind him who he's playing with

Iran needed to see this signaling too.

You're bullshytting. You don't know that.
Assad has control of the vast majority of the country and the greater capabilities, getting rid of him is going to be far more bloody and drawn out in any case. Oh ye, good luck with finding a secular replacement that will hold the country together, but like most pro interventionist cheerleaders you didn't even think that far.

They struck the airfields that launched the chemical attacks.

Good move.

I'm ok with that.

They violated the arms 2013 arms deal.
American people just got reminded that Syria existed yesterday and not they're genuinely confused about whether or not to be angry about Trump's decision.

Who said I was pushing for outright regime change?

I'm ok with the wrist slap. I'm not unaware of the investment to do anything beyond that.
