Gangster rap dying is a very rare positive thing about todays era.

The 90's had

Gangster Rap(NWA, Dr. Dre with the Cronic, Pac, BIG, Mobb Deep, etc)

Native Tongues(De La, Tribe, etc)

Conscious Rappers, 5%, Black Power(Public Enemy, BDP, Poor Righteous Teachers, Brand Nubian, Arrested Development, etc)

New Jack Swing Dance shyt(Heavy D, Big Daddy Kane, Father MC, Wrecks n Effect, Hammer, Mase & Puffy, etc)

Weed Rap(Cyprus Hill, west coast shyt)

Jazzy shyt(Gangstarr, Digable Planets, Pete Rock & CL, etc)

Southern shyt(Geto Boys, Master P, etc)

add in a ton of other artists- Wu Tang, Heiro, Rawkus Records artist, DJ Quik, 3rd Bass, Outkast, Black Sheep, etc etc etc etc.... I can go on for days breh.

-I'm a 90's aficionado to the fullest. NOTHING was touching the 90's. we had it all back then. whatever you were into you had your pick.

-fukk all this trap/auto tune/weirdo shyt we got now

Man, if I could, I would send any female pornstar of your liking to your doorstep all lubed up and ready to go. That's how much I cosign this post.

The 90s were def way more diverse in comparison to now. Whatever you wanted you had it. Nowadays everyone seems to follow a forumla when it comes to the mainstream.

Minority opinion but I don't want to see gangster rap die just a balance or ways to find different kinds of rap. Like pete pointed out the 90s had a mix of subgenres available through different means (radio, Yo MTV Raps!, Rap City, Video Music Box, magazines, etc.) These days in order to succeed it almost seems like you have to veer into downbeat/electronica or trap/808s territory w/ your sound. It's too narrow IMO.

That Kanye/50 sales battle was symbolic of the changes in hip hop now.

It goes in cycles, always has.

D, Ice T Bdp then the Native Tongue movement then the Death Row era then the maffioso takeover to the puzzy era to g-unit now we're back to singing.

They all have their place, dudes like 50 shouldn't try to be like Drake and Drake shouldn't ever, ever, evaevaeva rap about 'catching bodies' :comeon:

I think it goes in cycles in terms of subject matter, in terms of skill/lyrics it's more downhill from the 90s

Don't really know, 50 is more lyrical than most 90s gangster rappers from the West (not counting the East maffioso movement who would destroy any of today's rappers).

Some of the soft cats got lyrics as well. Drake / kendrick etc, Ye doesn't count because he has ghostwriters.

There's no Chronic or Midnight Marauders being dropped, but I'm starting to accept that nostalgia makes us biased as well.

Young cats aren't fukking with Tribe at all, they look up to Kanye (for instance).

I wouldn't say 50 is all that lyrical, to me he isn't good because of his way with words, but more or less his delivery, and charisma. He had that grimey dude presence, (Up till the GRODT) like Prodigy from thge 90s.

I can agree about Kendrick, Drake...well maybe early Drake, not so much current Drake. But I can agree that there are rappers nowadays that are as lyrical or even better than 90s cats, there aren't that many in the mainstream today though.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I don't really suffer from the nostalgia thing. If anything, in my case I would be nostalgic over early 2000s rap..that was when I became cognizant when it came to rap music.

It was then when I started digging in the crates (And I'm still digging) and checking out early hip-hop, from dudes like Rakim, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane and so on to Nas, Big L, Das Efx, Wu Tang and so on.

The reason I'm saying this is to more or less to let you know that when it comes to me saying that the 90s were better, notsalgia has nothing to do with it, it's an honest statement that I make after comparing hip-hop music from those different eras.

Gangsta rap post 2000 outstayed its welcome. That was when cats got boxed in and made those punchlines about how big their guns are, how many bytches they fukked, and how many bodies they caught. I knew back then that it was on its last legs when white kids from the burbs stereotype blacks and be wiggers-and were on point with them. On point, I mean that the bullshyt they dished out was actually accurate. All it needed was a Wayne or a Kanye to end its popularity at that point.

Another thing was gangsta rap was literally going no where. The same fashion, same behaviors, same shyt year in, year out. Hate "soft" rap as much as ya want, but they had the ability to re-invent themselves over and over again to appeal to bigger audiences as well as younger generations. They actually have freedom of expression and they don't conform as much as gangsta rap did.

That what led to the shyt of today.
