The consoles are the way they are because its what the market wanted.
The console gaming market has let it be known:
We will not pay more than $400 for a console, period. Don't tell them about the value proposition as they don't care. If they wanted to cross that $500+ line they will just hop on the superior platform (PC).
They want to keep physical media (which increases production costs + higher failure rates)
Don't bother giving them things that won't really be of much use in gaming (The motherfukking Kinect is the answer here)
That's it really. What else did you want Sony/Microsoft to do and still make money? They aren't in this business to be friends with you...they need to make money.
