I don't think Sleeping Dogs should be considered if FF7 Rebirth & FF16 aren't flops.

According to Square Enix, the game didn't meet sales expectations.

Sleeping Dogs: My favorite game of all time. Love the story. Love the fighting. Just love the game. But like the OP mentioned Square Enix, and by proxy UFG just caught some real bad breaks. :francis:

Was about to mention this. Imagine if that sequel came out :sadcam:

Rebirth and XVI didn't flop, Square not meeting their expectations =/= "flop".
Square also said Hitman, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider games didn't meet their expectations but nobody would say they "flopped." FF Rebirth is still 9th best selling game of the year as of recent .:skip:

Actual "FLOPS" are things like Concord or games that sold terribly. Shenmue for example was a poor performer.

Sony stans :mjlol:

If you look up the definition of the word "flop", not meeting expectations is mentioned.

It's considered a flop by their standards even if others would say otherwise.

Incorrect, "flop" means to fail completely. Under performed, "didn't meet expectations" is far from being a complete failure which is what multiple dictionaries online show the definition to be.

Also, I provided context around that "failed to meet expectations" phrase they throw around a lot which is why I said it's not a "complete failure." How is a 9th best selling game of the year and we're in Oct a "complete failure" as per the definition of the word flop and not what you wanted it to be?
Concord is a "flop", that's a complete failure. Saying Rebirth or XVI is a "complete failure" or "flop" is absolute insanity. Flop does not mean "failed to meet expectations' no matter how hard you want it to be. There's so much misinformation/misleading context around discussion of this.

Until we know the exact cost of development and how much units it sold and the revenue generated, we cannot confidently state it "flopped".

shyt like this kills me. Y'all are so damned hung up on what someone else calls a flop that the thread gets derailed for pointless back and forths where people are trying to "win" with opinions.
Three posts in a thread about the topic at hand is a derailment? Just keep scrolling. This forum just thrives on stupidity fueling discussions.

Especially if it affects how they handle things going forward (idk if it does or doesn’t here, I never finished part 1 of FF7). I’d definitely go off the publisher expectations before the fans tbh. We can’t make them do shyt

"The term has been prevalent for several decades, primarily within the music and film industries, to refer to projects, albums, or movies that did not perform well commercially or critically. "

Rebirth being the 9th best selling game this year doesn't mean shyt, if those sales come below internal company expectations even if the consumer still thinks that it's good.

If I'm projected and expected to sell a million copies and only end up selling 800,000, that's still a flop by internal company standards even if you the fan think it's still good a good number.

Company expectations vs fan expectations can have two completely different meanings.
