This was the beginning of the end for GoT. They started shortening those seasons.. Oh it's not the budget, we just planned it this way. Rushing. Bullshytting. fukking up

I hope this ain't that... But I'm not sure I have faith in that
Hotd is a lot less content and story than Thrones tho so a 8 episode season isn't really problematic

Nah, the beginning of the end for GoT was around season 4 when the show surpassed the books. The downfall of GoT was down to the low quality writing, not the shortening of the seasons.

I wouldn't compare this to what happened to GoT. With GoT, the two execs decided to rush for a couple reasons. First off, they decided to basically throw Martin's story in the bushes and do their own thing (outside of a few specific things they kept). The second issue was they were talking to Disney behind the scenes and were planning on doing a Star Wars show (that was later scrapped). If HBO had gotten their way, those final seasons would have been 10 episodes and would have likely followed closer to what Martin is planning to a degree. Obviously they couldn't do it 100% since the show cut out entire plot lines.

Martin has more influence over HOTD now than he did with GoT by the end, and he's clearly planning this out. There are multiple specific plot points, characters, and BIG moments that have to be covered but I truly believe you could complete the story in three seasons of 10 episodes. Shortening the eps is a clear sign they just want to string this on for four seasons. I still think they'll be able to thoroughly cover everything. Expect a VERY different pace from early S1. There will be a lot of characterization and a much better job at developing characters. New and old.

Yea D&D ruined it because they wanted to rush and do other projects.

Ruined a classic show

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven

We still got Mountain vs Viper and Watchers of the wall in Season 4. Season 5, Hardhome and Dance of the Dragons but it was going downhill.. Season 6 Battle of the b*stards

But those 7-8 seasons... Where you went from 10 eps to 6-7.. You could feel the 3-4 hours being needed BADLY...

It's not like we starting with 8 or 9... HotD started with 10 as well.. Trust me, we're going to miss those extra 2-3 hours and it'll show in the worst fashion

HOTD won't have that problem the events they need to cover for the entire show amount to what happens in season 2 and season 3 of GOT
as long as they save the budget on the dragon battles and big character deaths the show will be done by season 3.

They really shouldve started at Aegon being born and then continue on to HOTD episode 1. I mean they could make GRRM the best adapted literature artist ever

(no real spoilers except for the names of certain battles)

^^Lots of good points that explain why this decision is actually good for the show, as its slowing the story down and likely splitting what was going to be 1 season's worth of material into 2 seasons, similar to Game of Thrones taking book 3 and splitting that material between season 3 and 4.

Or put another way, HBO and the showrunner is turning 10 episodes into 16 episodes.

The article out right says a battle and plot surrounding the battle that was originally going to be in season 2 is being moved to season 3, a change in story structure that the article says necessitates a 4th season.

Without going into spoilers, I know what plot they are talking about so just from a storytelling perspective, this is a great development because I had fears that season 2 would feel extremely rushed....sort of like if Jon fighting the Wildlings in season 4 or Oberyn fighting the Mountain was included in season 3 of Thrones. But that fear has been greatly reduced with this news.
