Being a leader is not the same as being alpha. My boss is the leader in my job group, he would not fall under the alpha definition at all (unless you believe he's an alpha male because he's a leader).

The ways I've seen the term alpha used is mostly like the OP describes, not a simple substitution for the word leader. A lot of times it's about getting women.

The alpha male thing is true to an extent. People are drawn to others they perceive as having resources. The concept of alpha male can help men build their confidence and work ethic to acquire resources and be at their best.

Its extremely rare to see an in-shape, financially strong man with a big network of influence being lonely and angry and spending his time on message boards and social media complaining about how the world is unfair to him. Men like that tend to dominate in whatever environment they're in because they give 100% at whatever they try at. It is true that 20% of the cause gets 80% of the results. We've seen it dating, we have seen it in sports, we've seen it in the corporate world. Not everyone will fall into that 20% but as a man you owe it to yourself and everyone around you to give 100% and try to fit into that group.
