Man. Had to rewatch the Fubu episode 3 times. It is the most earn-est portrayal of public school I've ever seen on television. Glover really captures all the nuance of a regular day in high school. It really gave me The Wire Season 4 vibes. Also the child actors had their adult counterparts mannerisms down to every detail!

Damn that shyt had me feeling anxious and I’m a grown as man. :picard: I was nervous for Earn the entire time I knew he was gonna get lit up at some point.

But back when I was in school so many nikkas had fake colorful bapes and Captain America Js that it wasn’t even worth saying anything. At a certain point everybody just accepted it and even gave dudes props when they came with a nice color way.

Fubu made me think of the first day of school going with fresh Js or this cold LBJ jump suit I had in 8th grade. Shows don’t give me them memories that often so salute.

Colorful bapes fake js and fake Air Force ones was all I seen. High school was different if you was still rocking it then, you knew what You was doing.

So if you rewatch the episode a couple of things about Devin stand out. Every time we see Devin on camera he's alone. Earn is mad that he's not popular, but he actually has friends and girls actually like him.
  • When Earn gets on the bus he has someone to sit next to when other kids don't.
  • In science class Earn has a lab partner. When Devin does the smirk he's sitting by himself with his head down on the desk.
  • When Earn needs help he reaches out to Al who is the coolest kid in the grade. Devin has nobody to stick up for him.
  • When Earn is in the cafeteria he sits with 2 friends. One white and one black. Showing that not only does he have friends, but he's already able to navigate racial barriers. Where's Devin? Devin is eating lunch at the tail end of the table alone.
  • When Earn is running to his bus, the girl gives him a number AND his friend comes to check on him before he gets on the bus. Devin is chased to the bus alone.
This was done purposely and I believe Devin alludes to it in the cafeteria. When he's being bullied in the cafeteria his response is he's always wearing fly shyt. When Earn describes Devin to Al Earn makes a point of stating that Devin's dad is 30 so you know he always has the cool stuff.

Earn, like Devin, falls for the trap of materialism. Cool things don't bring you happiness. Just having a core group of friends in high school (IN LIFE!) that you can talk to, laugh with, run to makes you a millionaire. Earn bought the FUBU to impress his classmates, but they ALREADY liked him. They were already cool with smart Earn. They were already cool with DBZ Earn. But Earn wasn't cool with himself.

Kids don't realize or appreciate the beauty of having friends that don't care about being impressed and like the same "corny" "weird" shyt that you do.

Those kids then turn into 20yr olds posting "new year new me" twitter/instagram/fb posts.
REPPED!

Some robbing observations from “FUBU”:

1. Devin of course robbed of his life, in this case, by himself.

2. Paperboi robbing the lockers

3. The high school kids being robbed of their adolescence. Kids enter high school at age 13 or 14, an age that has kids still entering puberty. High school brings an entirely new set of superficial problems, especially for the black community, as we value clothing, designer things, and money at an early age, which immediately sets a hierarchy amongst the students who can and can’t obtain them.

No more are the days where you can wear random shyt together with some shoes from Payless and clothes from Walmart, now you have to dress to impress and find a group of kids that you fit with.

I also like how Donald juxtaposed how white kids in HS think about the things we value with the white kid saying, “this is the second time I’ve worn this this week”.

Also being mixed with seniors who’re 17 and 18 doesn’t help, because their mindsets are completely different. A 14 year old is completely inpressionable, especially when in contact with older kids who are “cooler”. This is one way how bullying and acting like something you’re not starts.

Donald, Hiro, and the entire Atlanta team are amazing, and I can’t wait until the season finale

Good as, better or worse than the 1st season?

Slightly better.

Episodes like Teddy Perkins, FUBU, Woods, and North Of The Border put it over the top for me.

Season 1 was already phenomenal out the gate. But Donald took the concepts to a whole nother level. He’s basically making mini movies every 22-30 minutes. shyt is incredible.

When Earn was trying to sneak through them hallways to make it to the bus, :wow: that shyt gave me anxiety like I was watching Freddie Krueger lol. nikkas wouldve roasted you till your spirit elevated. The fact that he had the courage to make it to lunch was impressive. There wouldve been atleast one person at the table on his "look at this CitiTrends fake jersey head ass"...Wolves wasnt waiting for no chinese kid to let off jokes.

I remember if you had the Fubu jersey with the matching Saucony's/AF1's you was a rock star.

I wonder what its like to be a middle schooler now :mjcry:
I don't know how these kids do it. A few years back one of my close friend's son dealt with some shyt where some people at his school made a facebook group called "****** is a fukking creeper" and invited damn near the whole school to it. In the group his classmates all jumped on there talking about how he's a weirdo and weird shyt he does. Kid tried to kill hisself.

Now that I think about it I remember copping the McGrady's the day before he did the all-star game alley oop:

I was the first one to have that in school too. T-Mac was my favorite player at the time so it just made sense. Either way, I show up to school Monday and in Social Studies cats were def hounding. You know shoes look different in the magazine vs up close, so everyone wanted to see them joints on my feet before going out and getting a pair themselves.

I do remember one of the homies going, "But he ain't rocking it right!" :hhh:

Like a few months later I remember one of the varsity captains pulling me aside in the cafeteria cause I was wearing them with a red shirt. :snoop: Don't ask me why I tried to pull that off.

shyt is :russ: in hindsight.
