it isnt that simple man

as far as we could tell Devin looked like a pretty normal, even cool kid. So I cant see a reason why he didnt have any friends.
Kids can definitely be relentless. Devin probably only had all the fly shyt because when parents are getting divorced they often try harder to overcompensate for the turmoil they're putting their kid through.
I think Devin wasn’t use to set backs. He had the nice clothes and family with money. Earn on the other hand was use to taking Ls. One character was able to persevere because they had seen adversity before and overcame. As the other was coddled and didn’t know how to handle a serious problem because money saved him.

yall know they gave that girl in class Ritalin, right? :usure:

I have anktber theory.

I think she was suffering from malnutrition or food deprivation. There are alot of black kids that go unfed in their households. If you notice how perky she was in that last scene, she was carrying a fast food bag of some sort.

Food deprivation can lead to mood swings and general irritability.

it was incredible because it showed just how different life is for black and white people. But whose fault is it? We impose the high, materialistic standards on ourselves to be honest. On some real shyt, there were times i'd go out with my white roommates in college and never did they comment or put down shyt i wear. If anything theyd think i was overdressed for certain occasions. These same white dudes would pull some bad bytches too. White privilege

My nikkas? There were times where if we went out they wouldnt even let me leave the house without changing the fit. To have those grown adults saying how "important" clothes were without knowing what caused the kid's suicide. Very profound...and real. My parents were the same way making us dress up in certain ways for occasions against our will.

We have to look at what context Earn’s mother and Aunt were speaking on clothes. They were speaking from the point of view that black people, especially black males, have to look flawless in order to have a chance at progression within society. This goes back to respectability politics as far back as Dubois and the concept of the Talented Tenth.

This concept becomes diluted as commerce enters the equation. As we allow the thought process of looking presentable as a tool of survivial to be misinterpreted as looking “fly” or catching the “wave” to become an overall status sumbol. Within the minds of children, who haven’t grasped the original concept, this can become an over exaggeration of status. Kids don’t have jobs, house payments, or any real bills or responsibilities with which to indentify themselves as valuable contributors to the community. Add on top of that the trauma and PTSD of a BLACK community reeling with the vicious psychological effects of Jim Crow era racism (not even mentioning slavery) young black kids are misinterpreting clothinf with self worth.

We are dealing with SAD children who are desperately grasping onto any small modicum of respect.

It’s honestly quite maddening when you break it down

When Earn was trying to sneak through them hallways to make it to the bus, :wow: that shyt gave me anxiety like I was watching Freddie Krueger lol. nikkas wouldve roasted you till your spirit elevated. The fact that he had the courage to make it to lunch was impressive. There wouldve been atleast one person at the table on his "look at this CitiTrends fake jersey head ass"...Wolves wasnt waiting for no chinese kid to let off jokes.

I remember if you had the Fubu jersey with the matching Saucony's/AF1's you was a rock star.

I wonder what its like to be a middle schooler now :mjcry:

Eastbay is THE worst magazine to subscribe to if you come from a family that either can't or doesn't believe in materialism.
I remember I use to have to cut grass and other odd jobs to get dough for gear but before then, my homie use to get a check from the state every month cause his moms was bipolar or crazy or some shyt so he always had the nice shyt. I somehow some way got a hold of an Eastbay mag and lied about having an account so I could get free shyt the more he ordered. What I actually was doing was tacking on my shyt to this nikkas orders. And this was back when Eastbay delivered COD. nikka was freshly dipped until his grandma got hip to what i was doing. Then I started selling dope and my boy had the same hookup at Dillard’s a few FSU players did. Stayed in Tommy and Polo. Looking back, feel dumb for putting so much worth in clothes and other material shyt but going thru it :whew: I remember when folks got tired of Polo for a minute and started rockin this off brand ass Ivy Crew shyt from Goody’s :laff: We dome came a long way brehs
