Watching now.

His opening monologue was funny but the rest of it has been wack so far...

Its not even Donald’s fault. I just think SNL’s white humor is awful
Didn't know he was on SNL :russ:

If you not black you could NEVER understand how poignant them conversations with your elders are about family looking out for one another.

I got that “Black man in america” speech from day ONE from my pops.

Me and my siblings got that “look out for one another at ALL costs” speech daily.

That type of bond can’t be broken. Makes me think Al really won’t go through with firing Earn (even though he has every right)

The lesson of the episode is kids have no help from school or their families..... Watching this shyt I remember it:francis:

Earn out there scared for his reputation
Paper Boi robbing people in broad day light and everyone knows it
Devin going through real psychological stuff and committed suicide and all the kids get is 1 minute of a speech and a call home about it
The young girl got psychological issues and its "is today a good day or a bad day?"
12th graders torturing the 10/9 graders.......

shyt you had to be a survivor to become grown breh:mjcry: Then to survive as an adult is a whole other level of pain.

Middle School-High school really is a trial by fire for black kids.

Reminds me of that dave chappelle joke about the brittleness of white people’s feelings. They DO NOT go through a tenth of the psychological warfare that black CHILDREN do just trying to carve out an identity amongst one another let alone the wider world.

You gotta decide from a young age are you going to be passive or fight back?

Are you going to join in the roasting and verbal abuse of others or are you going to be on the revieving end of it?

Are you going to have the mental fortitude to brush it all off as just jokes (80% of it i’d wager is mostly just jokes) or are you going to take it to heart?

Will you be one of the TRULY unlucky ones who are deemed “disruptive” “unruly” who “can’t focus” and are subjected to mind numbing medication?

Will you be a tough guy, a nerd who does others book reports, a fast young girl who gives it up, a gangster, a jokester, etc.

What WILL you become to survive your surroundings?

:to: some real ass posts right here

All of these traumatizing shyt and we're just talking about what goes on within the physical structure of high school. We didn't even touch on what goes on AFTER school when kids have to take the subway or the bus home.

Think about it. Your peers that actually "know" you and "like" you will roast you to tears. Now think about what happens when that same kid has to hit the street among a bunch of strangers. shyt was on sight if your fit didn't match the surroundings, and shyt was on sight if you stood out.

I'm Earns age so I remember kids in NY getting robbed for these shyts constantly:

ep took me back to junior high.....i got outted for my bootleg Tommy Hilfiger shirt and my CoreSport (not jansport) bookbag.....i was in roast city for a week....

i don't remember any fubu shirts with tags on the front....

Nah b...I had the orange and black 05 fubu shirt. This episode hit home for me. One of my best friends and I were talking about this because the first class we ever had together was when I bought this shirt.

He bought the Fubu 92 jersey and got pressed by some 10th graders cause they thought it was fake. nikkas always trying to ref ya clothes.

This episode had to take place between Fall 1998, or 1999. Fubu jerseys went out of style before 2001. In 2001 Platinum Fubu was in style, with the help of Fat Albert. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z started playing on Cartoon Network in 1998. Aquemini was released in 1998.

Yeah I don't know why cats are fumbling with the years so badly. The episode focuses on fubu. Fubu was hot when "Fatty Girl" dropped. DBZ was playing on toonami from 98-03.

School is mental warzone for so many kids and when you decide to play sides like earn and his cousin, you don't know who you might be effected at the end of the day. Earn never tried to say the other guys shirt was fake but was never ready to sacrifice himself to protect him.
But that's the issue. A 12 year old should NOT be forced to make a decision about whether or not he should sacrifice himself. He's not old enough. He's not mature enough. He hasn't developed knowledge of self or the ability to look at the world from a humanist viewpoint.

One of the biggest drawbacks of slavery that we see with jim crow and the civil rights movement is that often times black kids were put on the front line to make a lifetime sacrifice.

This entire episode we see the kids owning and controlling the environments while the adults act as passive actors in the background.

This ep gave me flashbacks to wanting some of them shiny ass Eastbay bball shorts and the new Adidas Kobes that looked like spaceships, man Devin was catching it
Man...

Let me tell you about Eastbay. Eastybay is the fukkn devil b :heh:

Eastbay is THE worst magazine to subscribe to if you come from a family that either can't or doesn't believe in materialism. Every month (or however many times they printed them shyts) you're getting a document full of items that you know you'll never get. Every month you stare at that shyt, flip them pages, memorize the prices, the weight of the shoes, the cuts, everything - just so you can dream about a status you'll never obtain.

This episode made me realize how terrible that magazine was for us as kids.

The thing I found the most unrealistic was the fact that Devin didn't get the benefit of the doubt but Earn did. I remember kids like Devin. Spoiled, always had a fresh haircut while your shyt nappy, earrings and shyt, all the Jordans, always fresh. shyt wouldnt even been that much of a mystery, kids woulda automatically knew Earn was frauding.

So if you rewatch the episode a couple of things about Devin stand out. Every time we see Devin on camera he's alone. Earn is mad that he's not popular, but he actually has friends and girls actually like him.
  • When Earn gets on the bus he has someone to sit next to when other kids don't.
  • In science class Earn has a lab partner. When Devin does the smirk he's sitting by himself with his head down on the desk.
  • When Earn needs help he reaches out to Al who is the coolest kid in the grade. Devin has nobody to stick up for him.
  • When Earn is in the cafeteria he sits with 2 friends. One white and one black. Showing that not only does he have friends, but he's already able to navigate racial barriers. Where's Devin? Devin is eating lunch at the tail end of the table alone.
  • When Earn is running to his bus, the girl gives him a number AND his friend comes to check on him before he gets on the bus. Devin is chased to the bus alone.
This was done purposely and I believe Devin alludes to it in the cafeteria. When he's being bullied in the cafeteria his response is he's always wearing fly shyt. When Earn describes Devin to Al Earn makes a point of stating that Devin's dad is 30 so you know he always has the cool stuff.

Earn, like Devin, falls for the trap of materialism. Cool things don't bring you happiness. Just having a core group of friends in high school (IN LIFE!) that you can talk to, laugh with, run to makes you a millionaire. Earn bought the FUBU to impress his classmates, but they ALREADY liked him. They were already cool with smart Earn. They were already cool with DBZ Earn. But Earn wasn't cool with himself.

Kids don't realize or appreciate the beauty of having friends that don't care about being impressed and like the same "corny" "weird" shyt that you do.

Those kids then turn into 20yr olds posting "new year new me" twitter/instagram/fb posts.

I haven't gone through the thread but I loved the part with the white kid saying he wore the same shirt twice. Juxtapose that with "clothes are important" line. Brief but significant:wow:

I remember dress down days at school. I'd have Polo and make fun of anyone rocking Chaps.

Me: No horse:mjpls:

Chaps kid: Nah, this is Chaps:sadcam:
Me: You know what Chaps stands for?:jbhmm:
Chaps kid: No, what?:ohhh:
Me: Coulda Had A Polo Shirt:mjgrin:

Audience: :pachaha::gladbron::mjlol::umad::ufdup:
Chaps kid: :mjcry:
