Really surprised none of ya'll knew about Florida man. But I guess it's a Florida thing.

Basically, with the Freedom of Information law in Florida, it's maybe the easiest state for journalists to get information about arrests from the police. Thus, journalists have damn near the entire states worth of arrests to draw from and report on, and can just look for the wildest stuff. So, tabloids and blogs across the country can get their clicks with the tales of insane arrests down here, and with keeping with journalistic format, all these articles use "(A) Florida Man (or woman) in it instead of names in the titles.

Thus, you get the Florida Man meme, which takes it at face value and attributes it to one person. So a couple of years ago Florida Man became the like the Paul Bunyan or Johnny Appleseed of fukkery
