But are Billboard hits really needed in the streaming era anymore?
Songs go gold and platinum all the time now and get massive streams.

For a club artist like Future, no doubt you need hits. When I say hit, I dont mean numbers, I mean real world club hits. Forget a Billboard hit, he needs the songs that are requested at the club. He has to be the soundtrack to the turn up in real life. That was his whole lane. He's dropped like 6 full projects the last year and they've been duds.
As a DJ I cant recall the last time I even heard current Future being requested or played outside of Mask Off two years ago. And miss me with "King's Dead" lol. Even if you try to add that, the overall drought is real coming off that monster 2015.

He was in the clubs before he even starting charting lol

Not his current stuff. Again, i could care less about charts or numbers. In the real world, he's cold in the same clubs he used to run. He went from cant miss to not having "it" anymore.
Find me a video or DJ in clubs that says current Future is prime time lol. Those 5 projects last year did nothing real world.
FUTURE had a couple joints that played in the strip club and SS entire album was a strip club set(this may have been 2017)
But future is deep into his career and his dictating clubs days are over
