My mother started teaching in the 70s in Baltimore City public schools. She said it became much more difficult to teach and focus on the shortcomings of certain students when everything became centered around preparing them for this state test. People’s jobs are on the line when it comes to the scores so it puts a ton of pressure on the teachers and as a result they end up caring more about test scores than the students themselves

Seriously, I wonder if they can just make a curriculum that's centered on the state test. That way you're always prepping for the test without needing to do something extra.

Math isn't a spectator sport. To learn math you got to do math. To do math you got to go out and learn why you made the mistakes and correct them.

There are numerous websites everyone knows about. They're all free and have terrific explanations. There's ChatGPT as well.

So there really are no excuses.

It's because people aren't pointing their web browsers to those sites. They aren't interested and would rather clout chase on other websites.

This is part of the problem. Unlike some subjects, math is completely objective. You're either wrong or right. You're going to fail a lot until you understand what you have to do. It takes effort and practice.

But the kids don't understand these small failures are supposed to happen because the teachers are terrible. Then there is no educational foundation from the parents, so the kids have no idea that practice is necessary.

I've met adults that can't do algebra. The upsetting thing isn't that they can't simply do it, it's that they have no clue how to even conceive the problem. This is what those children become. Just give up at the first sign of difficulty and cease thinking.

So many of these kids have ADHD and other undiagnosed behavioral issues online learning isn’t even an option. The pandemic was an educational catastrophe for poor children.
This is a brutal story.
